History of Ravnica

A war-torn plane

Over ten thousand years ago the plane was torn in a war between ten armies. They battled and vied for control of the world which resulted in the creation of a pact known as the Guildpact. The paruns, or leaders, of the armies became the first guildmasters of Ravnica when they signed the magically binding treaty. The text of the Guildpact designated specific roles to each guild so that the city could grow and flourish while the guilds coexisted side by side. Howveer the true power of the guildpact was its magically binding force, which absolutely prevented large scale violence amongst the guilds. For ten millenia the city grew and flourished as the guilds evolved into unique and powerful forces, often venturing far form their original purpose.

The signing of the Guildpact marked the beginning of the modern Ravnican calander. Years prior to that event are denoted as "Al Concordant" or AC, and counted backwards from 1 AC. Years after the signing are "Zal Concordant" or ZC. The current date is 10,076 ZC, usually refered to as '76.
