Below the Undercity

While many in Ravnica believe that the only proper place to live is above the streets, there are others who seek the beauty that lies below. For above the streets is the noise and stench that comes with a crowded city, but below the streets is the silence that can only come from the ruins of a civilization. Those who live above chose to believe that Ravnica began, and will end, with what they can see. That Ravnica was always under the sun, because accepting the failures of the past is a reminder that failure can be in the future. Those who live in the darkness, or are at least very familiar with the darkness, understand that life is a cycle. That there is a beginning and an end to everything, even an age, and where one things ends, another begins. So they do not fear this proof of an end, but have accepted it, and thus are able to enjoy everything else that a life deep under the street of Ravnica can afford.
The majority of the citizens of Ravnica do live above the streets, in the city that stretches across the world. They live and work under the sun, and abide by the laws of the world. And yet there are those who can not live above the streets. Either because they would not be accepted for their race, for there are many creatures deemed monstrous, who are not in their hearts. And there are those who chose to live below the streets, for they do not accept the laws of this world. Whether they are here by choice, or by force, they have made a home in what is lovingly refereed to as the Undercity. The Undercity is made up of the ruins of a past civilization, and provides a haven for not only those seeking a different kind of life, but for the Guilds who desire secrecy above all else. The Undercity has become as much of a home as the city above the streets, and yet it is even below that, that I write of today.
Deep below the streets, below the Undercity itself, is a land almost untouched by humanoid hands. Full of glowing crystals. and deep caverns, it is a place of mystery and wonder. Rolling hills covered in the softest moss, surrounded by plants of the deepest red, few have seen the untouched splendor of this hidden world. Guarded by the creature who lives in this dark land, those who have seen it do not make it out to tell anyone else of it. An underground river makes the crystals sing, the most beautiful melody an ear could ever hear. And when the light of a torch illuminates the cave, it is as if the brilliance of a god has descended upon the world once again. I wept the first time my eyes set upon the sight, a more beautiful thing I have never seen. And as the light bounced through the crystals around the room, I heard the guardian for the first time, "You will remain here with me."
