Raveran

Created by

Raveran is a continent in the northern hemisphere of a planet comparable in size to Earth. Two moons, named Naliin and Nerone, orbit. A year is approximately 336.4 days and a day is 26 hours.

Iril, the raw material of magic, radiates from the world's molten mantle. These particles seep into and sequester in living things and certain crystaline structures. In Raveran, especially in the area of the Berenyl Mountains, magma is close to the surface and thus the ambiant iril is high. Many species native to this land have iril pathways, increasing their absorbtion and allowing the direction of iril into magic. Certain of these species require iril to thrive.

Throughout recorded history, humans have settled Raveran in waves. Over time, these populations produce not only a greater number of issiril - those able to use magic, but also issiril capable of weilding greater power. This discovery prompted a surge of human settlements, which in turn caused greater conflicts between human factions and with the native elves.

And dragons. With the magma and thus iril source gradually receeding, the dragon populations began to deminish while simeltaneously facing greater challenges from humans. Partnerships between elves and dragons existed prior to human arrival but the prevelance of dragon riders increased manyfold when the magic was shared with Shae'hana Gayar, a human organization that trains and policies issiril. Bonded pairs became vital martial forces, defending the northern territories from the Raveran Empire, which sought to rule humans and threatened the existance of elves and dragons.

Consistantly thwarted, the Raveran Empire began to fracture as individual lordships began to act in their own interests instead of maintaining allegience. With the next wave of human settlers came a new issiril organization, the Baalim. An alternative to Shae'hana Gayar, many lordships welcomed them, particularly once promised they could replicate the magic required to create dragon riders.

This they did and the vestiges of the Raveran Empire conquored the northern territory of Gladel by overwhelming force. However, internal conflicts soon cracked the Empire into pieces with individual lordships acting autonomously. Thus began the Dragon Wars with the lordships supported by the Baalim scrambling to create dragon riders and slaughter the dragons they could not control. The lordships backed by Shae'hana Gayar attempted to thwart this, requiring that they also bolster their number of dragon riders and form alliances with the wild dragons.

By the start of the novel Thunder, there are no wild dragons left and only a few bonded pairs. A planned prequel will show this world at the climax of the Dragon Wars and a third novel, set in the modern era, will explore the struggle of human and Drow coexisting.
