There have been parties of gnolls raiding the farming villages of the Midlands from the Emerald Forest in unusual numbers and with more magical capabilities than normally expected of the primitive gnolls. The Rakshasa are responding reactively with violence, but haven't yet taken the matter for something larger.   Is the Rakshasa intervention actually causing problem, because they’re forcing the gnolls underground where they’re festering...?   However, an underground group of 'Concerned Citizens' is taking a more pointed interest. One member of the Concerned Citizens is the Haegar's mentor, and another is the abyss-touched barbarian's demonologist minder, Lady Nailo. The two are colleagues and are putting together a group to quietly investigate.   Haegar's master wants to include his student because he trusts him, and because Haegar has relevant expertise, needs experience, and is from the Midlands. He also suggested Aavukaan since he's proven to be discreet and reliable.   Lady Nailo has known Penumbra for a long time and has a certain amount of trust in her, and so when she's in town to check in, Nailo asked her to agree to captain a ship for the mission.   The ranger Brightwing was traveling north to the Midlands from his mountain home in the Bonespears, following rumors of increased gnoll raids. He crossed paths with another one of the Concerned Citizens in Midfield, who sent him to the Wizard's Master in Narantaka because of his experience in tracking gnolls.   Lady Nailo has called together this group that she wants to hire to investigate. This includes the barbarian Pen, the wizard Haegar, the warlock Aavukaan, and the ranger Brightwing. She offers to hire them to take a ship around the cost to find out where the orc raids are coming from. She wants to keep it discreet for now so as not to raise the interest of the Rakshasa.   Meanwhile, the Aavukaan was keeping an eye on the Rakshasa that the demonologist reports to, since that Rakshasa is connected with his former patron since both are part of a ministry/group that keeps an eye of affairs of the natives, e.g. the Shadowcloaks (former patron) and cosmic connections like the abyss-touched. After seeing the two meeting, he decided to follow the demonologist to learn more about her. In hearing that the orc raids may be part of something larger, he decides to get himself added to the crew. ALTERNATIVELY: also referred by the Concerned Citizens, or he teamed up with the Ranger in the Midlands. THAT ONE. WIZARD’s MASTER.

Haegar: Human Wizard

He was born in an obscure village under a cursed star. After the village burned to the ground when he was a child, he made his way to the nearby city of Narantaka where he spent time as an urchin. He’s a pyrophobe, but fires do seem to start around him, big and small. May be coincidence, or maybe not... Somehow he started training as a wizard. H sought out a Master, trying understand the curse/fire connection.. He lives in the quarter (Carnival Row) of Narantaka where the fortune-tellers, mystics, and shamans dwell and do business. School is divination.   key abilities:

    Penumbra: Afferie (sp) Abyss-touched Barbarian

    Penumbra’s Mother left Rakshala and became a member of an order of paladins dedicated to combating demonic influence. This order had once been active on the island before the Rakshasa came, and had a brief alliance with them to eradicate demonic issues from the island. She came back years later with a child, leaving her in the care of her sister without much explanation. The child Pen was abyss-touched, and had been coming to grips with her power. She worked for years as a sailor in the northern port city of Narantaka, eventually coming to the attention of the Rakshasa because she carries an abyssal copper ax. Connecting her with the order of paladins (celestial runes on an abyssal copper ax), they deemed her not to be a threat, but worthy of keeping an eye on. She has a minder/parole officer that she's required to check in with periodically. This person is an elf demonologist who's been on the island since it had the demon disturbance that the order was combating. She doesn't work for the Rakshasa, but was consulted based on her expertise.   Rage = abyssal bloodlust. Afferie disaster sense, can’t be surprised.   Sailor background: can get rides on ships. 

    Bright Wing: Dwarf Ranger

    Raised by Terrakin in the mountains after his village was wiped out by orcs. He was too young to remember. Trained as a ranger with orcs and gnolls as his favored quarry and mountains as his favored terrain. Animosity towards gnolls based on Terrakin influence. 4’10’’, tall for a dwarf.   Outlander background. Smith's tools. Drum. Hyena teeth and fangs. This will help annoy the Gnolls.   Spells and features

  • Enthusiastic and earnest. Young and eager. Everyone should do what they think is right. Reverence for nature. Bonds: terrakin and nature. Flaws: not as people smart as some. Driven sometimes even to the point of recklessness.   Chaotic good.

    Aavukaan: Aasimar Warlock

    Reincarnated to serve a 'life sentence' as a better man after having been a member of the Shadowcloaks who rose to a high enough level to be taken on as a henchman by a particularly nasty member of the Rakshasa nobility (for 20-30 years). He wears a new face now, but retains all his memories. Trying to mitigate the harm done by the Rakshasa now instead of contributing to it. He’s only been his new skin for a couple years.
    Background: covert operative. Has a little bit of an identify crisis going on. His current ‘mission’ hasn’t really been made clear. Looking for purpose. Has a book given to him by his patron that he gets instructions from, the Court of the 3 Raven Princes (sons of the Raven Queen). When he does ability checks, sometimes he can find tidbits that appear in the book. He doesn’t know much about them. He wants to find out what he can, but without making too much of a fuss because he’s wary of asking too many questions (from them or about them). He knew some infernal magic from his previous life.   Resists necrotic and radiant damage. Healing. Eldrich blast. Create bonfire. Create light. Minor illusion. Sacred flame. Guidling bolt. Protection from evil and good.   Neutral good. Passes himself off as an adventurer.
