Belegroth
Pronunciation: BELLA-groth
Map Index: F4
Location: Northeastern portion of the Goraukoros Range of Beorlan (Due to scale, the exact location is not shown on the Atlas map.)
Description: Belegroth’s primary known entrance, found at the base of the Goraukoros Range where they meet the hills of Alvalariel, grants access to a vast hidden underground world of wonder. The deep and wonderous caverns of Belegroth, never fully explored, are naturally formed in a hard dark gray limestone. Adorned with remarkable breathtaking formations of flowstone, these caverns captivate the hearts of all those who dare to explore their seemingly endless depths. The dwarves proclaim that Belegroth’s vast network of interconnected caverns is the largest in the world.
A mysterious river flows within the caverns, large enough for boats to navigate, leading travelers over 30 miles into the earth. Beyond this point, the river plunges into an unfathomable abyss from which no one has returned alive. The great winds that flow in and out of this mysterious hole hint at the vast uncharted territories beyond. However, it is a great mystery as to what wonder lies beyond this point.
The more accessible outer regions of Belegroth have been thoroughly explored by many through the years, especially by the dwarves, who are said to have discovered hidden caches of fabulous crystals within the labyrinthine network of intersecting caverns and passages. Tales say that the dwarves know of 37 separate ways into the caverns, most of which are unknown to others.
However, it is the rarely explored middle depths that have become legendary, steeped in darkness, and inhabited by menacing creatures lurking in the shadows, denizens of a long-lost age. Due to this peril, only the most skilled and courageous adventurers dare to venture into these perilous realms.
Legends speak of Belegroth’s numerous enormous caverns, some vast enough to enclose a small city. Filled with shimmering pools and dream-like rock formations, these caverns evoke a sense of awe and wonder. The tales also describe entire cavern rooms adorned with rare and exquisite crystals, including extremely rare crystals of minerals never seen before.
Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None
Wildlife: The upper caverns host a diverse population of creatures that have adapted to a world without sunlight. The most numerous are the bats. At dusk, vast clouds of these winged creatures emerge from their cavernous home in search of small flying insects. Other creatures entered this endless network of dark subterranean caverns and never returned to the world above. Various species of salamanders and blind fish have managed to travel throughout this vast underground network, populating areas that previously had no inhabitants.
Humanoids: There are no permanent humanoid inhabitants in Belegroth.
Monsters: The dark spaces deep underground are the hidden home of treacherous inhabitants that lie in wait. Monstrous creatures with evil intent, eager to ensnare unwary explorers, lurk amongst the beautiful flowstone and still pools. Difficult to spot, some of these monsters resemble cave formations while others deceive explorers with their resemblence to crytals and natural rock formations.
History: Little is known about the history of these magnificient caverns. The first record of their existence was recorded by the dwarves who heard rumors thousands of years ago.
Today: Belegroth beckons with its enigmatic allure, promising untold wonders and untamed dangers for those brave enough to explore its dark and mysterious depths. But tread with caution, for the allure of its beauty may lead to a confrontation with the malevolence that lurks within.
