NYC Mafia

Largely undercut by the rise of corporate power, most old blood mafioso within NYC were as crippled by The Quake as the city itself. If not moreso, as mafia powers had already begun to wither in the shadow of what corporations could do. Many either allied with corps and over time became consumed by them, turning into security team extensions or urban spies for corp agendas (later downgrading even further into commonplace Johnsons and fences), or more commonly those that survived the dissolving overhead power turned into runner collectives bound by blood and spite.
Of the mafia families still running beneath New York City, that still call themselves mafia families, all are considered shadowrunner collectives. To some, the difference is negligible. (The Asimov and DeLaney families still run most of the import/export work at the docks, the Biancardi still hold pockets of the outer boroughs, and the Genovese still rule the criminal streets of Manhattan, and most of The Bronx.) But to the mafia themselves, the difference is catastrophic. The corps gutted them, burned their empires to ashes, and pissed on the remains. There isn't language enough to describe the grudges the surviving runner-families hold now, which some people find funny considering the fact that running at all means they often have to take work from the corps themselves. If not work that indirectly benefits competitors, one way or another. Some families have turned to less and less runner activity as a result, turning from kingpins to working class criminal groups, and others tried to reinvent their work as consulting for other runners and Johnsons-of-sorts with anti-corp agendas and a distance from any job clearly directly from a AAA corp.
Any way you cut it, the times they have a changed. The era of top dog Dons and consigliere who could terrify men with just a glance have passed. Even these monolithic powerhouses of money and influence have been laid low by the rise of corporations, and even they must now struggle just to survive. Of course, that's only a position worth pitying if you're one of them, or a corp above them. To everyone on the street level, the mafia still control the shit that matters- the streets, and everyone on them. Get active enough in their territories, and they'll take notice. And as soon as they do, you're either an ally or an enemy. And you're something they can still crush. Corps may be beyond them, but all that means is they've got a lot of anger stored up with no direction to put it towards. Make sure to watch where you stand around them, or you'll be nothing more than a convenient outlet.
