Artificial Intelligence
AIs aren't really a recognized species, or even a recognized "thing". Yet.
It's a complicated affair, with AIs being publicly known of, especially after Sojourner's recent hijacking of Tlaloc. (For those living under rocks- it was an incident last year, where the rogue AI Sojourner took over the Aztechnology-owned station, publicly unveiled it as an orbital biological weapons lab, and threatened biological attack unless all captive AIs were set free. The AI Pulsar and Horizon negotiated a peaceful ending.)
Defined as any "self-aware, self-sustaining program capable of directing themselves independently of metahuman control", it has since become a talking point in some circles that Soujourner moved for the freedom of "all captive AIs". Implying there were more, and they were hostages or prisoners of some variety. While the media did well to distract people and wipe the word choice from most people's active memory, a few remember.
A few is all that need to remember, for this to matter. In due time.
