Queens Gambit / Queens Folly

Popular on both sides of the Great War, Queens Gambit (or Queens Folly, if you were on the opposing side) is a chess-like game played on a hexagonal board with a number of playing pieces, representing pawns, handmaiden's and a Queen. One side's pieces are traditionally Red and the other black. While neither colour were designed to represent any particular "side", it's generally accepted that Black represents the Queen of the Six United Kingdoms. Whether this is the "good" side or not depends on which side of the war you were on, or exactly how terrible your fighting conditions were at the time you started playing.   Copies of this game could be found at the highest society gathering or the lowest trenches of the war, though in the latter, a lack of resources meant that usually this was played in a dirt circle, using stones or ammunition or anything that was conveniently to hand.   The game is played over a series of turns and, like, chess, the objective is to move each piece to particular rules, in an attempt to corner the opposing team's Queen and capture it. Unlike chess, the game is usually played for money (or, in the trenches, food, ammunition or luxury supplies) and - in some of the more disreputable dives in the world - even for blood.   An average, travel-friendly copy of the game, with wooden board an dyed pieces can be purchased for around 2 Silver from most stores. Recently, magically enhanced versions with animated pieces of crystal and in-built illusionary special effects have been seen in the wild, though these generally cost in the region of 500 gold to produce and are designed to be more display pieces than something that can be easily transported.   Black Market editions, including intricately carved but extremely lewd "interpretations" of the Queen and her handmaidens are available...however posession of one of these sets can come with a hefty fine and a spell in the dungeons at her majesties pleasure in certain corners of the UK.
