Modern Post-War fashion and Doppleganger Silk

With the Great War over, technology, materials and resources once destined for the front line war effort were re purposed and directed into more profitable civilian ventures. The idea of the "factory" and mass produced goods based on the application of certain magically enhanced technological enhancements is just starting to take root in the minds of the more Capitalistic cities of the known world.   One such development, is the creation of new fabrics and clothing. Fashion of this world has become generally analogous to the fashion of the post-WW1, pre WW2 1920s and 30s. Flapper dresses, Cloche Hats and dresses with ever decreasing hemlines are all the rage as fortunes begin to improve and richer materials, colours and textures become available to civilian life.   One such material is a sort of artificial fabric, known as Doppleganger Silk. It has the texture and strength of actual silk, but is produced in large quantities within experimental mills, running on the latest magical technology enhancements. It's production method means that any pattern, combination of colours or designs are possible - occasionally even offering animated, moving imagery that flows naturally as a person walks or dances.   Despite this, the material is cheap to produce and easy to obtain, so has become a mainstay of day to day fashion amongst the upper to middle classes of most major cities.   Of course, there are rumours of the terrible conditions that mill workers suffer whilst creating the fabric, and that there are sometimes horrible side effects from too much exposure to the raw materials used in their construction. There are even reports of dedicated fashionista's suffering strange and unusual mutations from wearing the clothing created for prolonged lengths of time...but all such stories are unsubstantiated and played down as mere rumour and hearsay by the Milling companies.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Looks and feels like genuine silk, but with a very slightly different texture. In it's raw form it is almost a shimmering, opalescent white but is most generally coloured and patterned before leaving the mill, and sold on the roll to tailors, in a variety of different styles and colours.   Animated material is available, but harder to produce and is thus generally made to order, at a great deal of expense.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Has the strength and propeties of regular silk. However it's magical creation has left it with the unusual side effect of allowing for magical animated enchantments which can be applied at great expense to the surface of the material. It is rare, but entirely possible to see a high-class Flapper strolling through town with a fabulous pair of doppleganger silk trousers, on which fae folk and devils dance and covort with every step.

Origin & Source

The material is not found naturally in the world and is originally an accidental by-product of attempts to create a new type of armour which had the strength of plate but the flexibility of cloth. The experiments were abandoned during wartime, but enterprising inventors took the abandoned prototypes and developed the result for civilian use.

Life & Expiration

There is a problem however, and it's one that the Milling companies are attempting to supress. Wild-magic incidents and even physical mutations are starting to appear in individuals who have prolonged exposure to the refined magical cloth.
