Tidesage

"Get a move on, lads! The bloody tidesage is keepin' the storm at bay for us, but it's getting fuckin' bigger ev'ry moment! GET YOUR OARS OUT, DAMMIT, IF YOU DON'T START ROWIN' THEN WE'RE GONNA HAVE ONE LESS PERSON TO WORRY ABOUT ONBOARD!"
— A particularly enthusiastic captain

Wicked Waters

The waters of the Eight Lands are treacherous to those who are unprepared.   Preparation comes in the form of those known as tidesages, or water witches. Their sole responsibility upon a ship is to smooth the waters for safe travel. They aren't responsible to making the seas a smooth ride, however, simply to ensure that major dangers are dealt with. Those dangers usually come in the form of storms or large swells, but at times can be obstacles that tidesages are less able to deal with, such as large creatures who can't be dissuaded from their attempts at gnawing on ships.

Water Witchery

Tidesages may drift from ship to ship as needed, but some choose to work alongside a single captain through their career, trusting their longtime relationship with the crew to let them operate as a well-oiled unit.   Acting as a tidesage is enormously draining and dangerous at times, even some of the best have had their lives cut short by becoming overwhelmed by their efforts.   One particularly wellknown tidesage, a witch by the name of Alicia Craft, was seen to thwart a summoned whirlpool, one large enough to bring down all the ships docked at Siren's Port. She didn't do so unscathed, however, as she nearly drowned after collapsing into the ocean. Only by the efforts of several sailors was she rescued from the waters.   Using her magicks against such a massive event, going against the summoners power and the natural power of the whirlpool, left her body scarred heavily with arcane and elemental energies, and has led to her being unable to cast the majority of her known spells.

I love that some tidesages stay with one captain their entire career. They must get a very good relationship with the crew. The quote at the beginning is perfect. <3   Your header spins now! :O
