Pexi

"OH WHAT IN THE HOLIEST OF GODS IS THAT?!"
"Oh shit, it's a pexi, I've read about those!"
— Two friends

Surprisingly there

While there are many creatures throughout the Eight Lands, including those who would defy any semblance of understanding, the one that has been kept in the shadows by obscurity the most has been the pexi.   Born of spores that float through the air and rest on trees, the pexi are tiny mushroom creatures that work together to build little communities. They are entirely harmless, feeding only on water and leaves. Any type of mushroom can be a pexi, but even if they resemble one that may be poisonous to eat, if it's a pexi, it's completely safe. However, while pexi are not fond of being eaten, they understand that it can happen to any of them and so they accept it as part of their lives.

Tucked Away

While they are born from spores that find their way onto trees, pexi communities are held in tiny caves on the side of a hill, a cliff face, or even the inside of a relatively hollow boulder. Their somewhat mutable size and form allows them to find a place anywhere they can fit, which helps keep them in obscurity.   These little creatures have eyes similar to that of a human, a mouth, and no nose. They have two arms and two legs, ended by hands and feet with three fingers and toes each.   When they do meet people who don't simply eat them, they get very excited, and love to climb onto them. However most people are usually freaked out by the suddenness of a hundred tiny mushrooms climbing onto them, which frequently leads to them being swatted off the person and stepped on. Much like being eaten, pexi accept that sometimes people won't react very well to being climbed on, and that their deaths are inevitable.

Aw! The poor little beans! They need cuddling and to be put on a "protected species" list! I demand it!! xD I would protect these little guys with my life.   Also, why are you creating so many beasties that are adorbs?

Because what's life without whimsy? And the nightmares are coming, don't worry! There are some already if you know where to look!

These little guys are hilarious and so joyful. I wouldn't mind building a community house for them and take them on my travels. :3   Keep up the good work! :D

Awww... they sound so adorable! My heart hurts a little for the way they just accept untimely deaths, but then again I guess that's healthier than spending their life in fear of all the creatures that might eat or squash them.

How very zen of them. :P   How likely it is that they would be able to live inside a herbivore, for example? Also, could they form a relationship with plants similar to that of lichens?

Not particularly likely, you'd have the issue of them not being able to make new pexi. They could theoretically form a relationship with plants but I wouldn't know how that'd look
