Ithrevini Ethnicity in Pronathea | World Anvil

Ithrevini

"You know their name isn't literal, right? Like I get it, you think they're northern, but just because half the word for them is close to their word for "north" doesn't mean it actually means that."
"Well what does it mean then?"
"Ithrevini? It's closer to... the risen, I guess? I'm a bit rusty."

Look to the Skies

Living amongst the peaks and near the top of sheer mountain cliffs is where one might find the ithrevini. Their homes settled against the rocks, letting their choice of mountain or cliffside shape how their cities and towns develop. For some of them, they occur with a more vertical approach, whereas others keep to roughly the same height but spread far from their origin.   From their perches high above the land, they peer into the skies, fascinated by the pinpricks of light that fill their nights above them. The stars that look down on them and the colours that are scattered behind them of the different nebulae.   Because of their tendency to look upwards, their culture holds the stars in great regard, including naming their children from the stars seen in the sky of their birth. A child born in Lightspeak might be named Ttillia, a star in the red glass of the sky near summer, whereas a child born in Dustwind might be named Paeyl, a dark spot in the sky seen best in the last weeks before the winter months.

Hearken to the Ground

Like the others of their kind, the ithrevini do not differ much from their kin. The only advantage they have compared to some of their others is simply a greater natural ability to climb and find secure purchase amongst the hundreds of potential points along any route they may take up a mountain or across a cliff face. Alongside this advantage, their eyes can shine in the night, and while this might be seen as an advantage to some, it brings no real benefit to them and can make being in areas like well-lit city streets a minor headache.   While they largely reside amongst the mountains of the Eight Lands, there are some ithrevini who choose to view the skies from the lower ground or simply choose to not live like the rest of their kind. It is simply their cultural fascination with the stars and night sky that keeps them from the ground and elseplaces, no physical matter or a form of entrapment. Those who choose not to live like the rest of their kind are not shunned, and, much like peaceful visitors, will be welcomed upon their return.
