Ashen Serpent Species in Pronathea | World Anvil

Ashen Serpent

"The creation of the ashen serpent is one that not many know about, and is quite often confused with that of a phoenix. Where a phoenix might be born again, they do not literally rise from the ashes. The one true creature to rise from the ashes, is the ashen serpent..."

From the Fire, Born of Flames

Nestled within the rocks on the edges of the mouth of a volcano rests an ashen serpent. It thrives off the heat that the churning molten rock emits, and while it isn't resting, it devours any creatures that come near it, along with the superheated stones nearby.   It rests for weeks at a time, hibernating in the warmth of the stones. Due to their way of living, ashen serpents can go their entire lives without encountering a single person, though usually at least one shows up and runs away before it can get to them. Ashen serpents are large, but they are not necessarily quick to react when waking from dormancy.

Rising from the Ashes

Born after eruptions from the ashes that are spewn from the volcanos throat, ashen serpents are grey, with the colouration of their scales appearing as if a fire roars in their bodies. They are vicious, and can tear apart even the thickest of armours.   Due to the unique way they are born, ashen serpents do not reproduce, they simply live out their lives after they have been formed by the volcanos ashes. They do, however, die after roughly twenty years, as they slowly deteriorate. Their bodies are not long for this mortal world, and should one be active more regularly than every few weeks, it is entirely possible that their life would drain away more quickly than it would otherwise.

Oh wow, not even gonna try for these ones? Damn...

Oh, don't be fooled. I definitely would give them a try and tame them. But seeing as moving shortens their life span, I don't want to put more harm on them. <3

So they live out a total of 20 years, or can they live roughly 20 years with a typical schedule of hunting, hibernation, etc.?   Would it be possible for some of them to hibernate most of their lives and awake, e.g., once a year for a very short period, only to replenish the resources?   Another pleasant little critter. I like the exotic ones. :D

The latter, but it isn't possible for them to go dormant for most of the year then pop up once or twice, because they need to eat more regularly than that. Winter months make it easier, they just rest through them, but they have to fill up before then and make sure they get food after, so there's a balance to their activity. I'm glad you're digging the more fantastical ones!

Awesome work as always! With no reproduction and a creation from volcano materials, what makes them a creature and not just a force of nature/weird sentient ash glob/elemental serpent thing?

It's less that they aren't an elemental serpent and more that they're more than just an elemental serpent. They exist because of the harmony of these elements, but those same elements give them life, not just a facade of it. Unfortunately it's not terribly much of a life, but it's one nonetheless. And as always, I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying my critters!
