Northern Draconic

Maybe one day they'll learn to fly

The latest addition to the Draconic Cultures, this is nonetheless one of the oldest cultures in the world.

Geographical distribution

These villages can be easily found by the mountains on the northwestern part of the world, but some of them can be found on the northestern side as well. They chose the height of the mountains as it brought them closer to dragons, something which their predecessors always aimed for. This accidentally made them guardians of the younger dragons, as they tend to be far more reckless than the adults while also being much less capable of flying and defeding themselves.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

As any other Draconic Culture, they reprimand anyone who damages dragons, as they have a deep respect for these creatures.

Physical confrontations are seen as 'disgraceful' and are frowned upon; instead, it is encouraged to talk things out and reach an agreement with as least damage as possible

Common Dress code

Commoners are to dress differently from the Chief and Hunters. They primarily wear furred clothing to keep the cold away, but unlike the latter two, they are discouraged from wearing any headpieces or other forms of accessories.

Hunters are given shoulder pads and carefully crafted clothing in honor of everything they go through to provide for their village. They are also able to carry weapons around at any given moment, unlike commoners who are 'not to be trusted with such artifacts'

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When the child of a Chief is born, every family is to give something to the Chief's family that they believe will help the child grow up safely and strong. Some offerings include, but are not limited to:
  • Clothing
  • Dragon toys
  • Headpieces
  • Fruit (specifically, apples

Coming of Age Rites

Old ceremony

Every year, right as the Fourth Season starts, everyone who is 21 years of age or who is to turn 21 that same year, they are sent to Mount Onolde to make sure to save any and all dragon eggs that fall. If someone lets more than 5 eggs fall to their doom, they are deemed a disgrace and banished from the village
Those who succeeded, however, were recognized as fully-realized members of the village and respected as fully grown adults

Current ceremony

After the unyielding rain took over the previous place, Mount Onolde remained an important place for a person's transition into adulthood. Now, they are tested on physical skill and strength, as they are required to climb all the way up from the clouds to as close as they can to the storm clouds. When they climb at least one kilometer, they are given the chance to go back to the village, their adult status recognized, but those who go further are honored with a dragon-shaped tattoo on their right shoulder

Trivia

  • The Eastern and Southern villages have strict architectural rules; these guys straight up don't care
  • Unlike their predecessors, they have no buildings that accomodate for dragons' comfort, yet they seem to be the ones most in tune with them
  • They helped the Traders devise several flight artifacts, although mostly out of personal interest

Ooh, wow, this is an intense people to grow up among! They really love dragons. I wonder how many people have been banished for dropping over 5 dragon eggs? :O A frightening thought! And a great article. :)

That old ceremony was a bit drastic. Was there no way to redeem themselves?

These people's identity revolved around protecting dragons-- so no, I doubt they would've forgiven someone who failed to protect dragons when they were just eggs. A bit sad, but luckily they now have one that is not as harsh

I love how the coming of age eremony has changed over time. Sounds like a really interesting culture. :)
