The Last Church in Old Kaltahg

The Church of St. Cenric

The air is thick with the stench of ash and coal. Hanging above the lonely, barren field is a mournful pack of gray clouds, courteously hiding the ruins below from the harsh midday sun. The ground has begun reclaiming the scorched dirt where humble edifices once stood. What remains are the blackened stones of a sizable church.
"A memorial to those who've lost faith; a momument to tradgedy"
- Brother Eadwulf Trafford
Within the remains of Old Kaltahg are the forgotten remains of families that dared to side with Marcelet, the Blasphemer. In the matter of an evening, the entire village was razed to the ground. The Andryte forces have reported on numerous occasions to their superiors that there were no survivors, yet there are rumors that people still convene within the rotting remains of the last church in Old Kaltahg.

Destruction of Faith

Insurrection, of course, does not occur overnight. A woman by the name of Marcelet Cenric was a Sister that studied the various tomes of the Bled Mother. A philosopher and a scholar, she often disobeyed many rules of the Andryte clergy within the town of Old Kaltahg that she was assigned to. Her duties, like many agents of the Andryte faith, were to educate the masses with the teachings of the Bled Mother and Andrytus. The townsfolk took kindly to Sister Marcelet, as she often involved herself with daily affairs such as lending a helping hand where she could. If someone's spouse took sick, she was the first to aid the family whilst they recovered. She was, in a word, compassionate.
"Empty it be now. Took nary a decade to put the thing together only for those that sanctioned the bloody thing to turn it to cinders. Wretched be the Andrytes"
- Unknown Kaltahg Stonemason
The people of the village saw to it that Sister Marcelet had a proper church instead of a house of wattle and daub. Whilst it took the stonemasons nearly a decade, the church was finally completed. Limestone walls, a thatched roof, and plenty of space for the people of Old Kaltahg to sit and listen to the Sister's teachings. To return the favor to the townspeople, she violated the rules of the Andrytes: she taught them to read and write so that they may interpret the tomes of the Bled Mother themselves. Tomes, however, were incredibly difficult to come by as the scribing of the tomes took several years, so Marcelet violated another rule by taking up disciples to help her create more for Old Kaltahg to enjoy. Such a task was only permitted by Brothers and Sisters of the faith. It would not take long before Marcelet began teaching the citizenship of the hypocrisies of the Andryte faith and how the high clerics lived like kings: feasting every evening and sleeping upon feather beds whilst they harvested every last coin from the humble people.

Wrath & Spite

As Sister Marcelet's reports grew scarcer and scarcer, an agent of the inquisition was sent to investigate her lack of missives. To their horror, the entire town had seemingly discarded the faith, speaking on their own interpretations of scripture. The agent quickly fled the town, reporting what blasphemy Sister Marcelet had sewn within the town. In a matter of a month, a force of inquisition agents return to raze the village to make an example of those that dare turn away from the sanctioned Andryte faith. Many believe that Marcelet died in the tragedy that is known as The Inferno of Old Kaltahg.   Despite what the inquisition reports, many of Old Kaltahg survived. They still convene within the church now called the Church of St. Cenric, plotting to one day destroy the Andrytes for daring to take away their intellectual freedoms that were gifted to them by Sister Marcelet.
