The Dragonstars

Among dragonkind, the Dragonstars are the most cultural significant and powerful artifacts in the world. They are a set of ten perfectly cut spherical gemstones that contain incredible magical power. Each of them is bound to one of the ten types of dragons. Their most renowned ability is the power to call upon and control the type of dragon each of the Dragonstars is bound to. They can be used as powerful arcane focuses which greatly enhance the magical might of the wielder. Arcanists have even found strange ways of using them to create a wide variety of dragonkin. It is also suspected that there are even more and stranger uses which these powerful gems possess. But if they do hold any other powers, it is now unlikely that they will ever be discovered.
Almost a century ago now, the Dragonstars were lost. At the time, all of them were in the possession of the The Dracarii Empire. However, at an unknown date, all of them were stolen away and lost to history. Where they are now is a matter of speculation and conjecture.
When the gems were first stolen, the knowledge of this was hidden from the citizens of the empire and the rest of the world. The military and spies struggled to hunt them down, but were unsuccessful. There was no evidence as to where they had gone or what could have possibly happened to them. And despite the best efforts of the Empire, the truth of the matter eventually got out. Approximately 30 years after the stones were lost, the decline in dragonkin among the Dracarii armies led the people and foreign powers to discover what had happened. At the time, the empire had already been fracturing after their loss of the stones, along with potential economic collapse and the stresses of an empire stretched too thin. It was the public discovery of this secret that broke the camel's back and ultimately brought about the collapse of the empire.
