Magic/Aether

Written by DinnBismarck

Magic is a type of energy that is generated within the cells of living creatures, and is expelled in large amounts by the celestial entity Valkithir as a byproduct from collecting life energy from deceased creatures. Magic in its purest form is known by either mana or aether, depending by region.
When activated by the individual, magic rapidly grows unstable, (much like water turning to steam) and must be vented from the body or risk damage on a cellular level. Luckily, when channeled from the body through a medium, different effects can take place. Mediums can be Modifiers (Spell pages) and Conduits (Weapons) both necessary to successfully cast a spell.
Preparing and Casting Spells: Different classes tend to have different affinities for magic, the Thaumaturgist being the most proficient. Thaumaturgists have learned and mastered the modification of magic's effect, by creating spell pages made from special materials that change the outcome of magic flowing through it. Though if you are unskilled in controlling the specific spell, the individual will not be able to vent the activated magic, and cause harm to themselves in the process. Because of this, different classes are given differing sizes of spell books to put pages into, limiting the spell's modifier complexity by the individual.
To cast a specific spell you need the corresponding page, pages working like prism to shine light through. The Guild gives access to page recipes, but it is up to the individual to craft a page that they want.
The Class table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must fill a slot of the spell’s level. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of spells requires time spent studying your spell book and memorizing the words you must make to cast the spell: at least 1 minute per spell on your list.
Cantrips: Cantrips are simple spells that do not require a conduit to cast, and may be cast as many times as one wishes. At 1st level, each individual knows a set amount of cantrips of your choice from you're own spell list. You learn additional cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of you're class table.

Manifestation

The cycle of aether is similar to that of rain. Aether is released by the planet and slowly ascends into the atmosphere, passing through life forms and substances and gaining an imprint as it does. The aether then collects in the lower mesosphere in large quantities as 'active' aether, warping and transmuting anything that passes into it. Over time the active aether becomes passive, and then drifts back down into the troposphere where it is absorbed by living creatures again.
Mana is strongly effected by other energy types; it is both absorbed by and passes through matter, taking an 'imprint' of lifeforms, material, and energy as it travels on it's path. With light, it takes on wavelengths of light seemingly at random, glowing in different colors, but this phenomenon is not visible to the naked eye unless in extremely dense amounts of mana.

Localization

Presidium is the only known celestial body that produces magic. This is thought to be anomaly created by the merging of it's celestial and earth's, as they were celestials from different universes. Magic is generated alongside life energy by creatures as they live their daily lives. When living creatures die their life energy returns to the planet/celestial and as a byproduct of this merge, a large amount of magic is released from the earth and into the atmosphere as ambient mana/aether.
