Underdark Beasts of Burden

The various intelligent peoples of the underdark are unable to use common beasts of burden such as horses, oxen, or donkeys.  Some of the beasts below are used on both the surface and in the underdark, but are far more popular as sources of labor below ground.

Giant Rats

Rats ranging from the size of large dogs to ponies make ideal beasts for many below ground tasks.  Small peoples are able to ride them, they are strong enough to pull roughly more than their body weight, they are more intelligent and more maneuverable than many beasts of burden from the surface and they will eat just about anything that could be considered food, if needed.  Unfortunately, they aren't as strong by weight as many other animals, and they need to eat very often and in great quantities.  However, for the wealthy, the people near the surface, or those who raid often, they can be ideal beasts.

Bullettes

A Bullette is a true mark of wealth and power. Extremely strong, capable of carrying several people and able to dig through dirt and rock, they are everything you could ask for. They are extremely difficult and dangerous to train and keep. Keeping them from fleeing or killing during training is a feat on it's own, much less actually getting them to be obedient. In the Underdark, these are nearly legendary beasts to tame for battle or labor.

Albino Giant Lizards

Various species of giant albino reptiles are among the most common animals used for labor in the underdark. They are fairly strong and often docile, though training is often a chore due to their slow nature. Still, they are cheap and easy to keep fed, and they do make capable mounts for combat purposes as well. Depending on the exact species, they can do some digging, climbing, swimming or move very heavy loads. Many of them also make very capable guard or hunting animals.
