Queens, New York

Bits of Infrastructure and Government: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens Original Content: Sam C, Dev X
I never appreciated growing up in Queens until I left it. My mom's husband -my stepdad; he always went on and on about traveling and experiencing other places, "The joys of being a part of the whole world" he would say. Here, I could order Jamaican jerk chicken with Chinese pork fried rice and wash it all down with an ice cold Spanish "Morir Soñando". The drink's name means "Die while dreaming"! I could have all that for lunch. On a Monday. Nothing special about it. I got to mix with people from all over, enjoy cuisine from all over and I gave that up, to play tourist all over.   -Special Agent Keith Broderick; FAD (Foreign Affairs Division)     New York is a melting pot and no borough represents the idea of diversity like Queens.   Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City. Queens is the second-largest in population (after Brooklyn), with a census-estimated 2,358,582 residents in 2017, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens is the second-most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, behind the neighboring borough of Brooklyn and if each of New York City's boroughs were an independent city, Queens also would be the nation's fourth most populous, after Los Angeles in California, Chicago in Illinois, and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.

Government

A strong Mayor-Council system. In the strong-mayor form the elected mayor is given almost total administrative authority and a clear, wide range of political independence, with the power to appoint and dismiss department heads without council approval and little or no public input. In this system, the strong-mayor prepares and administers the city budget, although that budget often must be approved by the council. Abuses in this form led to the development of the council–manager form of local government and its adoption widely throughout the United States.   In some strong-mayor governments, the mayor will appoint a chief administrative officer who will supervise department heads, prepare the budget, and coordinate departments. This officer is sometimes called a city manager; while the term city manager is used in the council–manager form of municipal government, the manager in the strong-mayor variant is responsible only to the mayor.

Defences

Due to a multitude of abuse and corruption cases involving the New York City Police Department; Dutch's Protective Services has been contracted to handle law enforcement for the borough of Queens. Till reconstruction of New York City’s Police Department is complete, their jurisdiction is primarily focused on Manhattan and a few satellite precincts in the other boroughs. In the case of Queens the districts of; Long Island City, Astoria and Flushing.

Industry & Trade

Occupations are spread relatively evenly across the health care, retail trade, manufacturing, construction, transportation, and film and television production sectors, however with Eden Foundation opening their Longevity Clinics and Headquarters in the borough, health care jobs have quickly risen to become number one sector of employment, providing 31% of all jobs in Queens.   Queens has the second-largest economy of New York City's five boroughs, following Manhattan. In 2004, Queens had 15.2% (440,310) of all private sector jobs in New York City and 8.8% of private sector wages.     Trade, transportation, and utilities are the boroughs second largest employment sector, accounting for 24%. Queens is home to two of the three major New York City area airports, JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. These airports are among the busiest in the world, leading the airspace above Queens to be the most congested in the country.   Education and health services is the third largest sector in Queens. The manufacturing and construction industries in Queens are the largest of the City and account for nearly 14% of the borough's private sector jobs. Comprising almost 16% of the jobs in Queens is the information, financial activities, and business and professional services sectors.   As of 2003, Queens had almost 40,000 business establishments. Small businesses act as an important part of the borough's economic vitality with two thirds of all business employing between one and four people.   Long Island City is a major manufacturing and back office center. Flushing is a major commercial hub for Chinese American and Korean American businesses, while Jamaica is the major civic and transportation hub for the borough.

Infrastructure

Hundreds of miles of pipes and wires deliver; millions of gallons of water and thousands of Megawatts to the borough. Freeways, bridges, overpasses, alleyways and streets weave in and out of each other like a asphalt spiders web that stretches out over Queens. Number and letter marked Mass transit vehicles in the form of subways and buses help the citizens navigate the criss crossing streets and avenues.
