Pandora Species in Potestatem | World Anvil

Pandora

A huge vine network centered within the East Jungles of Foisham The plant is a gargantuan interconnected superorganism. Only the World Tree and Sine Fine Vitem compare in scale.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Pandora Vine Can be broken down into four distinct parts.   Rocket Vine (Scientific Name: Eruca Vinea) fortyavailablediameter   Collecters (Scientific Name: Patero) A Collecter is a large funnel like leaf. Collecters are thick, palm leaf's which grow all across the rocket vines to absorb huge amount of water. Like how a Lutae flower turns to Lutae, the Patero naturally grows in a way to maximize water absorption. The leaves shrink in the presence of salt water.   Lure (Scientific Name: Trasavo) A lure is a three dimensional V-shaped structure with a gooey starch inside and a tough viny outside with a sea of spikes on its surface. These lures will grow in places with a high concentration of Rocket Vine; evolved to act as a protection for the plants Collectors. The most common lure is large enough to encapsulate a bear. Similar to the flytrap, the lure crashed closed when irritated. The strechyness of the lure often prevents damage to it and the ooze within coats victims and slowly burns them. Pandora Vine can also grow itself offensively, rapidly expanding through the use of excessive amounts of water.   Heart (Scientific Name: Pistil) The final part of Pandora Vine is the Heart. The nerve core of the plant, it provides the semi-intelligent movements and capabilities that the plant displays. Destroying a Heart will render the nearby Pandora Vines inert, but doing so has proven extraordinarily difficult. Pandora Vine can seemingly detect when one of it's Hearts is under serious threat of being destroyed. It is able to redirect some of the stored water throughout it's continent spanning system, empowering and rejuvenating the local vines to act in it's defense.   The Heart is also the central reproductive organ that creates seeds, distributing them via rocket vines to suitable locations. The Heart is roughly the size of a small house and usually wrapped in many vines and buried deep underground or within hard rock near the surface. A sufficiently large heart is also a source of Sliver of Divinity.

Growth Rate & Stages

The growth rate of the plant is its defining feature and the cause of the name 'rocket vine.' The plant utilizes its Collecters to absorb as much rainfall or other water as possible. The plant is then able to immediately utilize the water to grow at a rate of ten to forty miles per hours depending on the size of the vine and water quantity available. The growths in the right conditions can pierce stone. Due to this feature many species on Potestatem annihilate the plant to keep it from destroying their land.   Namely the Dawn Empire and Green Orc mix burning and farming the plant for wood and resources.

Ecology and Habitats

The plant needs huge quantities of water to grow. Dry weather, cold, saltwater and anything that would reduce the amount of fresh water access the plant has destroys it rapidly. The East Jungles provide the much needed water and the neighboring regions don't, thus the plant is basically synonymous with the East Jungles.

Utilizations

Due to the unique abilities of the plant, many people across Potestatem have utilized it as a tool and resource in bizarre and novelle ways.

Greentide Hills

The neighboring region of The Greentide Hills and its majority population of Green Orc's have warred with and used the plant for hundreds of years.   The orcs homelands has long been a victim of the plant. Times of increased rain have caused Pandora to expand beyond its normal borders and destroy dozens of Orc villages and camps. Due to this, nearby orcs spent up to a month of each year burning Pandora to keep it further away. Orcs overpopulation of the region often forced them to move close to the jungle despite this. If it weren't for Pandora, the orcs would have likely destroyed most of the East Jungles of Foisham.   On the other hand the orcs have long used the plant as a basic building resources. Unlike the hard to carve stone, or deforesting of other species, the orcs utilized Pandoras explosive growth to match their own populations explosive growth. The vines are not as sturdy as true cut timber but make up for it in raw volume. Although tasteless and bitter, the vines once dry are also a good source of nutrition. They can even be useful for war, as the orcs have managed to create a device called the Pandora Water Ram using them.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The plant utilizes an echolocation method that sounds similar to a large number of insects flying; a high pitched buzzing. The buzzing is a signal of its impending attack and one should look for lures hidden in the ground if the buzz occurs.  It is unknown how the plant knows to begin echolocating.
