Portal Earth

On the 1st of November 2017, the barrier erected around earth that made it and its inhabitants completely normal shattered. The fabric of the universe tore at this sudden breaking of the barrier, and portals to many other universes opened all over the solar system.
Various people who had superpowers based on inheritance unlocked those powers on that day, and many more would gain powers in the next few months. Beings from other nearby realms were also able to come to earth and some of them just decided to stay here.
Divine beings are real, but nobody is exactly sure which ones are. There’s definitely demons and angels, but also there’s also valkyries and at least a dozen people have reported meeting a thunder god of some sort. The elder gods of Lovecraft’s mythos are also real, but they’re not actually gods and are also currently attempting to sue him for slander. Aliens are real, but Seeker has been pretty empathic that humans should never try and meet them.
Technological advancement is currently kind of weird because a lot more fields have opened up and also because some of the greatest minds have gotten bullshit powers and are like “hey, what if I made a super suit instead”. Intelligent AI is real and worrying. There’s only two AI who are known to be at (or above) human level intelligence - one is a superhero, the other is a supervillain.
The current year is 2020. The American president is Al Gore. Nobody remembers why he’s the president, nor does anyone remember who was the president elected in 2016, but he just got re-elected so there’s that.
Being a professional superhero is very much like being a professional athlete (in terms of endorsements, etc) and isn’t really considered negatively by the vast majority of the population. Bills gotta be paid. The superhero community is about three times as large than the supervillain community, and every country has at least one superhero team. Unfortunately, superheroes do tend to squabble amongst themselves greatly.
The two largest teams are the Solar Guardians and Earth Defenders. They both announced their new team names on the same day and have been trying to get the other team to change it ever since. While the Solar Guardians are currently trying to fix their current group dynamic before they add anyone else, the Earth Defenders are currently recruiting.
