Beasts have plagued the land of Poraile since ancient times, when the first wars between mages over dominion of the world still raged on. Aether is the closest a mortal has gotten to wielding divine power and thus the consequences of these conflicts are felt today in the form of beasts. They were created to originally destroy specific targets or to inspire fear, but now they're just as natural as hurricanes or blizzards and just as deadly.
Some have devoted themselves to slaying these monsters - either for fame or riches - whilst others seek to learn more about beasts and eventually find a solution to the problem. This theorised outcome varies, but the main approaches centre around ridding them or controlling them for our benefit. Those who seek to do anything but destroy them, however, are in for more than just ethical questions from fearful authorities.
In the interest of both the readers and myself, the author, I must insist that the Poraile Bestiary that I have gathered within these pages is purely a scientific body of work. With the fullest endorsement of the Institute of Wizards and the Council of Camelan, these findings surrounding beasts and their behaviours are this humble archivist's way of attempting to assist the more physically capable in the extermination efforts. None of this information is kept - or hoarded, or restricted - for the reasons of preserving, taming or exploiting beasts for manual labour or entertainment. Such information is only included for the sake of thoroughness and accuracy, not condonement of any actions discussed.
With these concerns addressed, I will also admit that the Poraile Bestiary may also remain incomplete, since it only includes the locations and behaviours of beasts known to us. The Northern and Southern Beastwilds remain unexplored to this day, even by the most intrepid wizards and scholars. I hope nevertheless that this serves as a sufficient codex for the areas we have discovered and will be expanded even more as my work continues.
Kindest and respectful regards,
