Beasts, Death, Health

One of the two most powerful divinities in Jégoria's Lefelé, also known as the Downside. The Putrid Mother is at home in these dark cavernous systems, full of fungi, vermin and other hidden life. She represents the specific aspects of Decay, Rot and the Wheel of Life, belonging to the greater domains of Life and Death.   She teaches that the death of something is not its end, but that it still serves the whole by being taken back up into the non-sentient collective state of all matter. Everything comes from the same matter, and we return to it in the end. The processes of death can also lead to new states by fermentation or fertilization.   For this reason she is often credited with the invention of fermented foods, and she is frequently associated with mushrooms and (mushroom) ale, both of which are more commonly produced within her territory than elsewhere. Brining to ward off evil spirits is also used. She is also associated with certain medical techniques practiced here such as the use of fungi to combat disease or maggot therapy.

Hallow

At the center of a multi-cavern system lie the Gardens of Putrefaction, a small area filled with an astounding variety of fungi of all colors and sizes, tended to by the Putrid Mother herself. Whenever she finds out about a new species she has one of her followers bring a sample back here and grows it, so that she can see all of nature's variation together.

Appearance

Nowadays she tends to take a more human form, which is also the one used for most artistic representations. This is the form of a pale, cloaked woman with patches of blackened skin spreading around her left side. She does not care much for her appearance as evidenced by the fact that aside from the simple robe she wears no shoes or other clothing. Nor does she style her hair which simply falls like an obsidian waterfall from her head, cascading down her shoulders and nearly reaching to her feet.   It is said that her original form is that of a serpent that has another head instead of a tail. One side consists of glimmering golden scales and it is said her 'poison' can heal, while the other side is coal black and can supposedly spew death.

Followers

Kélemenedék is strongly matriarchal and as a result, so is her priesthood. While the men of Kélemenedék are obviously counted amongst her followers, they cannot rise above above the rank of devotee outside of exceptional circumstances. The upper echelon, also known as the Hexe, lead all religious ceremonies and are also of great influence within the political system of the underground city.   Interestingly enough, the Hexe live by a vow of chastity. Not out of any ideal of purity, but rather to avoid motherhood and the distractions that would bring which would hinder them in their capabilities. Some do end up pursuing motherhood out of personal desire, but they do so after retiring from their position. They are shunned by the Wolf-Kin for this very reason, as they consider it blasphemous to shun the gift of fertility and motherhood in favor of pursuing positions of power or magical capabilities.   The Hexe dabble in many field of study, mostly the arcane, biological studies and medicine. They are considered the great equalizers by the general population, as they make it a point to study every disease and condition, which has significantly improved survival rate in the Downside even under the somewhat primitive conditions. While they have a strict code about bringing no harm to the patient, it is considered part of the deal that if they are taking care of you, they are also allowed to study you and pick you apart in the eventuality of your death. To some this may be somewhat morbid, but the followers of the Putrid Mother is that there are important lessons to be found even in (or particularly in) death.

Devotion

Those who devote themselves to a divinity are sometimes rewarded for it, especially when they perform extraordinary actions. Kélet rewards those who pursue knowledge of the natural world and the processes of life and death. She promotes the study of these transformative processes, and her followers go so far as to even refuse burial, preferring being exposed to the elements and completing the process. She vehemently opposes any who would disrupt these processes through things such as necromancy, and she also denounces those who subject themselves to unnatural transformation processes like how some seek to subject themselves to the chaotic mutations of the káoszmag. She believes such mutations are a plague upon the natural world and should be cured.   Her blessings grant her followers the ability to more easily seek out and deal with affliction wherever they may find it. They are also afforded some protection against these matters so they can walk among the afflicted and study these processes more easily. Those who have earned her favor and trust are paragons of health and atrophy, capable of inflicting suffering as well as they can cure it. They have observed the natural processes to such an extent that they have a natural understanding of it and can magically replicate many of their effects.   Piety Rewards (D&D 5E)
