The Dream Giant

Legends tell of the Dream Giant, a towering, armored being with a portal to the land of dreams in place of a head. It walks a lonely circuit, ignoring almost all who try to communicate with it. It is said to watch over the realm of dreams in addition to providing the waking with access to that realm.

Summary

There aren't a lot of specific tales about the deeds of the dream giant, but there are a great many tales about its traits.   Common beliefs about the dream giant:
  • It is said to have great wisdom in addition to its formidable physical stature.
  • Those who can somehow get up to the hole where its head should be can directly enter the realm of dreams.
  • It is able to read the minds of those around it.
  • It was created when a powerful giant slew the lord of dreams, gaining responsibility for the dream realm in the process.
  • It has powerful sorcery immune to even the most potent antimagic.
  • Though the giant itself never sleeps, those who sleep near it always dream.
  • The dream giant hates and fights against nightmares.
  • The dream giant has a former mate who looks similar but is more female and is in charge of nightmares.

Spread

The dream giant is a fairly widespread, if somewhat obscure legend. Because there are so few tales of the dream giant actually doing anything, it's thought by most to just be a semi-interesting tale and left at that.

In Art

Several artists have painted or sculpted their impressions of the dream giant - in particular the head made of dreamstuff or a portal to the dream world is apparently too enticing of a subject to leave alone. Such artworks are sometimes displayed in bedrooms, believing that the giant somehow protects the possessor from nightmares.
