Van'hemair

Van'hemair, the ancestoral home of the Vanir. One of the most diverse planets, Van'hemair is home to lush jungles, deep forests, and vast oceans, all briming with life. However, wind-torn deserts, frozen wastelands, and lakes of liquid acid. Thousands of years of conflict between the Vanir and the Svart'ar have eventually cemented into an uneasy sense of peace, with the Vanir controlling most of the North, and the Svart'flar living in the south. Since the creation of inter-planet travel, however, the tensions have re-errupted once again.

Geography

Van'hemair is an incredibly varied planet, containing both areas of extreme biodiversity and incredibly desolated lands.

The Continents

Van'hemair has 2 large continents on its surface and several smaller ones.
Kvas
Kvas is the largest continent on Van'hemair, and the historical home of the Vanir. Kvas is located in the north and north west of the globe, shapped like a wide "V". Several countries are located in Kvas, icluding The Indepenedant Kvasian Republic and New Alfheim, both major players in inter-galatic politics. Kvas is greatly forested and has multiple mountain ranges, with a large sheet of ice in its northern reaches. The name Kvas comes from the Vanir god Kavsir, the god of Wisdom, Poetry, and Mead.
Dökar
Dökar is the second largest continent of Van'hemair, and the historical home of the Svart'ar. Dökar is in the far east, and has several associated landmasses directly to the south of it. Dozens of splinter countries exist on Dökar, from Novlar to The Tribe of Ivaldi to Svartalheim, although the most are members of The Inter-Galactic Alliance of Dökarian States, if not all. Dökar is home to vast jungles, wide swaths of untamed plains, and Van'hemair's famous Lakes of Sulfur.

Ecosystem

The ecosystem of Van'hemair is nearly as diverse as the planent itself, with the creatures of its world often considered fantastical and exotic by the creatures of other planets. Great creatures of Nordic legend wander the earth, from the brutish Jotun of the north and the War Wolves that roam the thick forests to the delicate but wise Mugann and the defensive Volkspawn.

Producers

Numerous species of plants and plant-like creatures exist in Van'hemair's forests and other areas, trees and bushes that produce fruits, and mosses like Lichmoss that provide nutreints directly for many plants and animals. The most notable producer is Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which many Vanir claim grows into the realms of their gods. Yggdrasil drops hundreds of golden fruits one every 12 months known as Lifefruit, which is harvested by the wildlife and the Vanir alike. The Vanir holiday of Yggdragsdag (literaly, Yggdrasil's day) is a celebration of life, rebirth, and the harvest of Yggdrasil.

Herbivores

Next comes the Herbivores, those that consume the fruits and plants of the natural world. As mentioned, the boar-like Volkspawn roam the forests and tundras of Kvas and feast on the roots and fruits provided by it. The Mugann and Dvalyrror both make their homes within the forests as well, feasting on the seeds and grass. Outside of the forests, however, live the Nokk, a species of scaled aquatic creatures that live within the Lakes of Sulfur and feed on Lichmoss that grows there.

Omnivores

Not many Omnivores live in Van'hemair, with most either being full Herbivores or Carnivores. Beyond the Vanir and Svart'ar, the most notable are the Jotun of the north and the draconic Lindwyrms of Dökar, which feast on small creatures like the Nokk and Vanspawn, along with the Lifefruit and roots.

Carnivores

The Carnivores: whether the simple hunters, or the massive apex predators, the carnivores add to the untamed nature of Van'hemair. The War Wolves (also called the Wargs) are large, carnivorous, quadrapedal beasts, which are considered sacred to the Aesir, one half of the Nordic pantheon. The Wyrm are large, very rare draconic beings that live primarily on Dökar, but have been known to wander to Kvas to hunt for Vanspawn and Dvalyrror. In the waters, the Hafuga remains the apex predator, feasting on anything it can find, before hibernating for the entirety of the winter.

Ecosystem Cycles

Van'hemair has a more drastic tilt than most planets, (such as Terra) having two seasons, each taking up half a year, Winter and Summer.

Summer

At the beginning of Summer, the plants grow, many animals come out of hiding, and the world seems to start again. The festival of Yggdragsdag occurs during the middle of summer, around the time when most plants grow their fruits, and when most animals are born. The heat and life only increases in intensity, until the last few days, when a chill seems to grip the air, warning of the coming of Winter.

Winter

Within days of the beginning of Winter, most plants wither and die and many animals begin to hibernate. Those who don't often store food for the winter, or hunt the few remaining creatures. Many Jotun, however, don't become active until Winter, lying dormat in the Summer. The Vanir and Svart'ar both believe Winter to be nessecary to life: the death and famine it causes only allows the crops and plants to grow stronger next Summer. Similar to Summer, the Winter seems relenting until the final days, when a warm breeze heralds the arriving of summer.

Localized Phenomena

Just like the seasons, the weather on Van'hemair is incredibly drastic. From destructive typhoons to blistering heat to strange magnetic auroras in the sky, Van'hemair's weather is a force to behold.

Typhoons

Typhoons, hurricanes, and tropical storms are frequent near the more tropical reigons of Dökar and many island nations, and not unheard of in the more southern reigons of Kvas. Thor is the Aesir deity of storms and typhoons, and is often prayed to for safty by the Svart'ar, while Njord (the god of the ocean, ships, and spacecraft) is worshped by the Vanir for the same purposes. Although most storms of types are mundane, some are beilved to be caused by Thor himself as punishment or trials.

Magnetic Auroras

In the sky, strange multicolored waves can be seen both night and day, due to the strange magnetic field of Van'hemair. These are said to be manifestations of the Bifrost, the mystical bridge used by the Aesir and the Wanes to travel the nine realms. However, these effects are sometimes projected onto the ground, creating large magnetic storms that strip the iron out of the ground and from living creatures, along with destroying artifical structures and technology.

History

Van'hemair has a vast and deep history, brimming with conflict, peace, innovation, and discovery. This, however, is only a partial history. A more indepth version can be found in the History of Van'hemair Timeline . This is measured in standard Intergalatic Years, equal to 500 Solar Days, or roughly 1.2 Van'hemain years.

Invention of Val'hemain Agriculture

The first evidence of agriculture was discovered in Svartalheim, estimated to approximently the year 23,000 PIY. The seeds suggest that two or three grains were grown, along with a starchy tuber called a Alfroot, and raising Vanspawn for meat.
