Charles Vane
Captain Charles Vane
Charles Vane was an English pirate who first operated as an independent captain in the summer of 1717, and by winter that year he was one of the leading pirates operating out of Nassau. He quickly gained a reputation for cruelty; he would often beat or torture captured sailors to force them to surrender their valuables.
Vane met up with Edward Teach (Blackbeard) at one point, apparently to form an alliance between the two, but after a few days, Vane left alone. Vane was voted out of his position by his crew in 1718, his replacement being his then quartermaster (Calico) Jack Rackham. 1719, Vane's ship was caught in a hurricane and was wrecked. He was picked up by an English crew, and tried passing as another person, but someone recognized him. Vane was taken to Port Royal, Jamacia and was hung in 1721.
