Atlantis

The underwater nation of Atlantis is the seat of the Atlantean Empire and one of the oldest civilizations on the planet that still currently exists.

Structure

At the top of the governmental hierarchy is the anaxa, the king or queen who presides over not only Atlantis but also the entire Atlantean Empire. Under the anaxa is the lawageta, the anaxa's second in command whose duties often overlap with theirs. Together, they oversee the nation's administrative, military, legislative, and judicial systems. The anaxa also oversees the Commonwealth Heads of Government, a collection of all the heads of state for the other nations in the Atlantean Empire. The lawageta, meanwhile, is the head of the National Council, a body of high-ranking officials who represent different aspects of the nation of Atlantis proper (similar to a cabinet). Below them are the korete, local officials in charge of the various districts within the nation, and the damokoro, local officials in charge of the cities within each district.

History

Atlantis was founded when the Atlantean people first arrived on Earth in approximately 5000 BCE.

Territories

Atlantis's area extends from the Mediterranean, with the capital south of Crete, out just past the strait of Gibraltar. Being the head of the Atlantean Empire, Atlantis also holds numerous colonies, all of which are ancestral holdings from ancient diasporas: Lemuria in the Indian Ocean, Mu in the Southern Pacific Ocean, Hyperborea in the Arctic Ocean near Greenland, and Ogygia in the Atlantic Ocean near the Caribbean.

Military

The premier military arm of Atlantis and the empire as a whole is the Marines. Their main job is to enforce the law, mainly by hunting criminals and acting as peacekeepers. Despite their numbers and training, the Marines rarely see any military conflict.

Technological Level

Atlantean technology is incredibly advanced in comparison to current human technology. Most of it is holdovers from thousands of years ago when the Atlantean people were still a spacefaring race.

Religion

Atlantis has no one official religion, and nowadays religion as a whole has very little influence on society. That said, there are still various religions practiced within Atlantis. The two most commonly practiced religions are Atlantean Dagonism, a modified version of the main religion of the Atlanteans' home planet; and Posedaoism, which was likely adapted from ancient Mycenaean religious beliefs.

Foreign Relations

Atlantis and the rest of its empire have strained relationships with the majority of surface nations. Despite tensions, Atlantis has no intentions of going to war with anybody and would rather resolve such matters diplomatically. In fact, Atlantis hasn't warred with the surface in several millennia. Granted, their last campaign against the surface may or may not have resulted in the Bronze Age Collapse.

Agriculture & Industry

In urban areas, Atlantis is famous for its service industries. Atlantis leads the empire in information technology, financial services, manufacturing, and research and development. In the more rural areas, Atlantis possesses extensive aquaculture. The most commonly farmed animals are shellfish like mussels and oysters and sea fish like seabass and seabream. In addition, aquatic plants like kelp and seaweed are also farmed.

Trade & Transport

Atlantis is a trade hub within the empire. It possesses an extensive network of deep-sea and underground railway systems, some of which reach tens of thousands of miles in length. Atlantis is also the hub of the empire's teleportation network, which was designed to easily access the more distant countries in the empire.
