Blood Types and Interspecies Offspring Condition in Phasmatum | World Anvil

Blood Types and Interspecies Offspring

There are six sapient species which can be found on Phasmatum. Four of these species are known and recognized as sapient beings: Humans, Kałceba (seafolk), Nyütlu (blissfolk), and Vlektso (beastfolk). There is one species whose sapience who is debated among various cultures: Phasma. And there is one species which is unknown to the majority of the world: Skyfolk.   Of the six sapient species, there are five primary blood types which a person can possess. Some of these blood types allow for additional abilities, particularly in regards to lifespan and health.

Blood Types

Magenta   Species with this blood type have a combination of hemerythrin and erythrocruorin molecules. These people are able to heal from injuries faster, though their lifespan is similar to humans. Found in Kałceba.   Saffron   Species with this blood type have a combination of vanabin and erythrocuorin molecules. Their natural resistance to disease or sickness allows those with this blood type to have naturally longer lives. Those with saffron blood typically live 25 - 50 years longer than the average human, barring serious injuries. Found in Nyütlu and Vlektso.   Indigo   Species with this blood type have a combination of hemoglobin and hemocyanin molecules. This allows them to breath normally in higher altitude spaces with an added benefit of significantly increasing their lifespan, nearly twice that of humans. Once reaching adulthood, species with an indigo blood type won't again until between 150 and 200 years. Once the aging process begins, they can expect to live between 10-20 years longer. When indigo blood types stay in lower altitudes for a significant period of time, it speeds the aging process because they must draw most of their oxygen from their hemoglobin cells. Found in Skyfolk.   Crimson   Species with this blood type have a combination of hemoglobin A and F molecules. This allows the species to store oxygen and iron longer in their blood cells. Additionally, the increased iron stored in blood cells allows for greater fertility compared with erythrocuorin blood types. Found in humans.   Bright   Bright blood shines in iridescent shades when a species with the bright blood type is cut; any of the blood that falls to the ground instantly turns clear. This blood type is seen in phasma creatures who were born in the membrane. However phasma creatures who were born in the physical realm—or one which has recently fed on another creature or being—will have one of the non-bright blood types.

Interspecies Offspring

Although it has baffled scientists on Phasmatum, sapient beings are able to mate with one another and produce fertile offspring. Genetic research has shown that the four known species are “cousins”, in a sense. Which is understandable for the three sapient beings which developed on Phasmatum, but absolutely no sense for humans, who travelled to the planet a mere 1000 years ago. This discovery has spurred a plethora of strange conspiracy theories, including one cult which believes that humans actually travelled into the future to reach Phasmatum and another who believes that Earth never existed.   Interspecies offspring take on the blood type of one parent. Crimson blood (or Hemoglobin A and F) is the most prominent of blood types in intra-human species relations, even when the child adopts other physical attributes or traits from their non-human parent.   Physical birth defects, while not common, unfortunately do arise more often in interspecies offspring. Some of the defects are purely cosmetic, such as mismatched ears. Others can be more devastating, such as a human and nyütlu offspring being born with deformed legs which limits their mobility. Possibly the most devastating condition is when a child is born without a necessary blood molecule (most common in Kałceba pairing with Vlektso or Nyüto). Children with this birth defect typically die soon after from lack of oxygen or must spend their life on oxygen tanks to make up for their inability to compete for oxygen in the atmosphere.   The question of whether phasma can mate with other sentient species is often posed. I think those who ask this have read too many mythology books. If the phasma do have the ability to reproduce with other species, it is certainly their best-kept secret in 1000 years.

This article is a work in progress. And also one of those pseudoscientific things that drive some people crazy. So sorry for taking a little bit of science words and extrapolating it into something that would never be possible in real life. So happy this is fantasy realm so you can just say the scientists are wrong and magic is everywhere. Let me know what you think about this article and anything else you're interested in learning more about in the realm of the genetics behind blood types and interspecies offspring.
