Marian Acosta

Marian Acosta

Marian Acosta is a Feromone Fairy Dust farmer, in Farland. She's one of several dust farmers in Farland. She's the only female farmer, and also the one with the smallest farm, with only one fairy cage. A fairy cage is roughly the size of a house and can accommodate several hundred Feromone Fairies.

History

Marian grew up as a Feromone Fairy Dust farmer, together with her two years older brother. Arwin Acosta. Her mother died when she was an infant and was named after her.
While she was growing up, her father traveled a lot, so for most of her life, her older brother and the staff on the farm took care of her. She grew very close to her brother and saw him more as a father figure than her actual father.
She was taught that everyone had to pitch in, and spent several hours a day doing chores around the farm while being taught reading, writing, and basic mathematics by her brother in the afternoon and evenings.

Early Teens

For most of her early childhood, Arwin kept her away from the fairy dust farming until she was at the beginning of her teens, where he began including her in the daily work.
Initially, it seemed like an easy job. The fairy cage had lots of huge plants, where the faeries could live. She had to feed them once in a while, usually old vegetables or fruit, but since the fairies were a sentient race, it was just as easy as placing a bucket of food inside the cage, and they'd handle the rest themselves.
Seeing how the fairies got treated, however, was not so easy for her. Their food was usually half-rotten, and the fairies were depressed from their lack of privacy in the overcrowded cage. Furthermore, fairies that were deemed well-suited for breeding, usually those with the biggest wings, got put into smaller cages and forced to breed.
Having been raised to be dutiful, Marian did as she was told, and fed the fairies, and helped to get them into the breeding cages when they refused.

Mid Teens

After she had been working on the farm for a couple of years, one of the fairies that called himself Tyke, started showing up, whenever she came to the cage. He started to indirectly help her, by acting as a mediator between the fairies and her, whenever there were disagreements. It was as he was trying to make things easier for her, and he kept telling her that he understood why she did the things she did that she was also a victim, being raised to do horrible things to other beings.
Over time, she came to both expect and rely on his help, and a close bond grew between them. She even visited the cage, when she wasn't working just to spend time with him. One thing she especially appreciated was that he never asked her for freedom, not once. It was as if he really did care for her.
One evening when visiting Tyke in the cage, she decided to take him out of the cage and snuck him into her room, planning to return him the next morning. They talked most of the night until Marian fell asleep. The next morning, Tyke was gone, along with her key to the cage.
She found Tyke in the middle of freeing the fairies. Being so small it had taken him hours to get the key to the cage and unlock it.
She caught Tyke by surprise and tossed him back into the cage before all the fairies managed to escape.

Growing Up

Marian had a great deal of respect for her brother and confessed what had happened. Arwin asked her to show him which fairy Tyke was, which she did.
As punishment Arvin took Marian and Tyke to the local blacksmith, where he ordered Marian to cover Tyke with molten iron, which she did. Rather than feeling remorse while doing it, Marian found herself feeling satisfied by Tyke's cries of pain, shortlived as they may have been.
Marian decided to keep the statue, and gave it as a gift to the faeries, where she placed it in the middle of the cage, for all the fairies to see. A monument of Tyke's lasts moments of agony and an eternal reminder of what happens when you try to break free.
From that day, Marian found new pleasure in her work as a fairy dust farmer. Not long after, they received word that their father had passed away. Marian had never been close to her father, so it didn't affect her that much.
It wasn't long after his death that she learned that there was more to their lives than just fairy dust farming. Arvin told her that he had to leave her in charge of the farm, as he had to take over the business responsibilities of their father.

The Family Business

The Acosta family was more than just fairy dust farmers, quite a lot more in fact. Her father was a founding member of The Freeport Trade Confederation, a confederation of the wealthiest merchants in Kantaras. Not many people knew that though.
Officially The Freeport Trade Confederation was meant to be beneficial for all merchants and traders in Kantaras, like pooling logistical resources and work to keep trade taxes low. Although this was all true, the real benefactors of the confederation were the once pulling the strings, pushing their own agendas. The Acosta family had a huge interest in keeping the fairy dust trade under control. Feromone fairy dust had a very high price, but it was quite easy to come by, once a farm was established. If too many farms were established, competition would bring the prices very low, and as such, The Acosta family had fought to control whom, and where people were allowed to farm the dust.
Arvin's job had been to secretly keep an eye on the competition, and their dealings, which was best done, by hiding in plain sight among the competition, as a small competitor.
After their father died, Arvin passed that responsibility on to Marian, while he stepped up to take their father's position in The Freeport Trade Confederation.
