Erekian Lord

Just as the Erekian Monarch, is a non-hereditary position, so is the lord. A lord is chosen either by The Council of Elders of The Light, or by the Monarch.

Requirements

Only a Knight of Rahn can become a lord, as they have all been educated in diplomacy, etiquette and combat, and are considered true followers of The Light.
Although the title of Lord is non-hereditary, historically it has been quite common that family members of former lords have been chosen. Usually, lords groom one or more of their children to inherit their title or to earn a lordship of their own. Often the lords that are chosen have proven themselves to be natural leaders, or managed to be on good terms with either the Monarch, The Council of Elders, or both.

Appointment

Whenever a lord is appointed it is usually because a replacement is needed for another lord, in which case the appointed lord will be granted a fief.
If the Monarch or The Council of Elders desires to settle new land they may also appoint a new lord to settle the land.
In rare cases, lords are also appointed with the main purpose of claiming new territory in The Wildlands, an untamed area of land to the south of Erekiath.
When either the Monarch or The Council of Elders have chosen a Knight of Rahn to become lord, a coronation ceremony will be held, in Castle Haistone.
As a courtesy, the entire Erekian Nobility is invited, but contrary to the coronation ceremony of the Monarch, attendance is optional, unless specifically stated otherwise by the Monarch or The Council of Elders. If more than one knight is to be lorded, it is usually done at the same ceremony, primarily for practical reasons.
At the end of the ceremony, the Monarch hugs the knight and gives them a kiss on their forehead, as a sign of friendship, and from that moment the knight is considered a lord, with all the perks and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a lord is to govern their lands and collect taxes from the citizens. There are strict taxation rules imposed by The Light to ensure that no citizens are taxed more than they can afford.
If a lord was granted a fief or land upon his appointment, governing will primarily be what they do for the remainder of their life.
All appointed lords will be granted a battalion of soldiers, all trained by The order of Light. In cases where a lord was appointed without any land to govern, they will usually be granted one or two additional battalions, for the purpose of claiming new lands and settle them. In these cases, the additional military power is often temporary.

Benefits

While most of a lords tax income goes directly to the Monarch, they are allowed to keep a portion for themself. Although it is expected the lord uses the funds in the best interest of his citizens and Erekiath, he is allowed to do with them as he pleases, without interference from the Monarch and The Council of Elders.
Lords tasked with claiming new territory in The Wildlands often spend a lot of resources on mercenaries, to help clear out monster infestations.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

If a lord is found dishonorable, incompetent, or for any reason unable to carry out his job, the Monarch or The City Council can force a lord to abdicate.
Should a lord wish to abdicate by themselves, they can request permission to do so from the Monarch or The Council of Elders. If either refuses the request, there is no way out of the position, short of dying.
