The Prince fall

The reminiscence of the beloved ruler Rhidgaer III has remained alive in the memory of the people of Virkenhall and, although he was king at the time he gave himself up to death, the place of his death is remembered as The Prince Fall. It is a rocky wall, bathed by a waterfall, and surmounted by a ledge from which flows a spring forming a small lake. A part of the wall has a softer slope allowing the descent through a stony ground to the lake and river below.

Lyr's shrine

The rocky ledge that surmounts the waterfall is partly occupied by a small sanctuary dedicated to the God of the sea, Lyr. It was built in 1200 ca. around the tomb of the sovereign and is famous for the alternation of white and blue limestone blocks, the colors devoted to Lyr. The structure of the temple is rather simple, square with a sloping roof in terracotta tiles made in Virkenhall, consisting of a central nave, occupied by two rows of cherry wood benches, a central altar with the apse that houses the tomb of the sovereign.

Lover's Orchard

Around the shrine there is a grove of cherry trees known in the region as the Lover's Orchard. Lovers, whether reciprocated or not, often go to this place with their beloved ones or, if single sided, to think of them. It is customary to hang a ribbon bow with your names on the branches of trees to promise mutual fidelity.

Fate's rafts

During the celebrations of United Shields, on the summer solstice, it is custom that the citizens of Virkenhall who have a very dear desire can invoke the grace of Macha, goddess of destiny. To do this they have to carve a wooden boat, etching the name of the Goddess on it, and placing a candle on the boat. The candle is lit just before entrusting the boat to the waters of the stream, if the candle should reach the river below still lit it is believed that Macha will grant the fulfillment of the wish within the following Heart of Winter, the winter solstice.
