Ancient Protection Tradition / Ritual in Phaiyon | World Anvil

Ancient Protection

Either this area was used for an important ceremony, or a convoluted means of cooking soup.
Archeologists discovered a peculiar location at the center of the Sweetstone ruins. An intact table, believed to be an alter, was built atop an elevated structure. Stairs line each side of the platform and are carved from the rock itself. Most, if not all ceremonial objects were present in and around the area upon discovery.

Materials

The center of the alter is hallowed out. Above it sat a metal cauldron, elevated by a sturdy wire framework. Ash and other burnt remnants were found within the carved space. There was nothing within the bowl.   On one side of the cauldron, an intricate knife sat atop a patterned cloth. The fabric was a dark blue with silver stitching depicting humanoid figures. The blade was made from an unknown crystal and found to be still sharp. Its handle was made from sweet stone with a spiraled design carved along its length.   Clusters of the same crystal were discovered on and around the alter. Behind the cauldron was a statuette of an unknown figure or deity.

Images

The ritual site and its surroundings contain various depictions of otherworldly beasts. Some were pictured attacking people while many were slain or bound in chains.   The most intriguing were a series of paintings on a nearby wall. They depicted Phaiyon's continents as they were before The Great Shattering. The images after were of the lands breaking apart, potentially bringing about the end of the world.

Theories

Researchers are still piecing together the many mysteries surrounding the ruins. Based on their findings, this ritual was most likely religious in nature. It may have been a form of protection against danger. They are still unsure how this culture conjured images of an event that happened long after they disappeared.
