Kalu
Kalu is a cosmopolitan mega-city/city-state built into Mount Stalwart and the neighboring Vltav Sea.
Kalu stretches over 6 miles from top to bottom, with its highest points almost 22,000 feet above sea level and its lowest points more than 13,000 feet below sea level. Many of Kalu's inhabitants live their whole lives without seeing the sky; a few even doubt the sky's existence.
Thousands of years ago, several growing surface, aquatic, and underground cities began to merge into one another, forming Kalu.
As the city expanded underground, it came into conflict with the drow and duergar of the underdark. Since then, Kalu has conquered and absorbed its downstairs neighbors, and today many drow and duergar live side by side with the city's other inhabitants. Still, Kalu's military spends most of it time skirmishing with raiders from more distant drow or duergar cities and fighting the monsters of the underdark.
Kalu has an incredibly diverse population, containing citizens of every known race.
- Mountain dwellers like aarakocra or goliaths are common near the peak of Mount Stalwart.
- Near surface level, all of the usual races, such as humans, dragonborn, and elves, are common.
- Aquatic races like triton and sea elves are common underwater, in the Vltav Sea.
- Underground, there are many kobolds, dwarves (including duergar), deep gnomes, and drow.
- Kalu is capable of slowly producing warforged and thus has many warforged citizens. The city's military values warforged as they do not need food, air or water.
- The city even has a handful of celestials, dragons, myconids, gith, and friendly yuan-ti or illithids.
- Regular farms, that grow things like wheat, corn, rice, and tubers
- The same farms but underground, using magical artificial sunlight
- Underground fungal farms
- Fish and algae farms
- Hydrothermal and geothermal farms
- Food created through alchemy or other magic
- Trade with the city-state's neighbors
Commentary
Kalu can be a background location for PCs, giving all sorts of options including good drow and people from ridiculously overcrowded cities.
