The Mats (species)
The mats are a perfect example of a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Individually, the organisms comprising the mats are genetically similar to bacteria and algae. Alone, they are hardly a dominating species. However, when the organisms form into a mat of billions of individuals, they are able to combine their tiny levels of intelligence into an emergent mind far beyond any other natural lifeform.
