Greketian Calendar

The Greketian calendar was created by Greketian philosophers during the golden age of Marinth. Their goal was to create a calendar that would stay synchronized with both the solar and lunar cycles. They designed a twelve month calendar that alternated between 29 days and 30 days. While that did stay synchronized with the lunar cycle, each year only had 354 days, so the seasons drifted. To correct this, kings would sometimes declare an intercalary month.

The Barcovans further refined the calendar by adding a 30th day to Rigartus, while the philosophers of Techence proposed a intercalary month of 30 days that would be observed every 3 years.

The Greketian calendar spread to much of Pentavia during the expansion of the Barcovan Empire. However, after the collapse of Barcova many kingdoms renamed days and months in honor of their own gods and customs.

Months

The Greketian calendar has 12 months in a year. The months alternate between having 30 and 29 days. The months with 30 days are referred to as full, and the months with 29 days are hollow. Rigartus originally had 29 days, but it was increased to 30 so that the full three year cycle would have 1095 days.

The 13th month, Techus, is only observed every three years. It is 30 days at the end of the year. It was added to prevent the seasons from drifting more than 20 days.

Note: Years 1 and 2 are only 355 days, so solar events drift 10 days later each year until it is corrected by the insertion of Techus in the third year.

Weeks

A typical Greketian week has 7 or 8 days, depending on where it falls in the month. In hollow months, the 2nd week of the month has 8 days. In full months, the 2nd and 4th weeks of the month have 8 days.

The days of the week are each named after a different Marinthian god. In Barcova, every Emportae was a market day, and every Tactae consisted of compulsory military training for men over the age of 12. Oitaes were used for weddings due to their association with Oisteria, the goddess of love.

Variations

The mechanics of the calendar are still used across Pentavia, but many kingdoms have renamed the months and days to reflect their local customs and history. For example, the Rashidi have changed the names of the days of the week to reference the seven miracles performed by Wazir.
