Disruptor Transmitter

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The device is hidden in the cargo hold that emits a ship-disabling pulse with the flip of a switch. It is a small, albeit powerful transmitter that draws intense amounts of power from a ship's reactor. The transmission is maintained so long as the power continues to flow. For this reason, it is activated sparingly or during emergencies; in order to keep its existence a secret for as long as possible since it is possible to shield against it.
Where did you even find the plans for something like this?
— an impressed but skeptical liaison

Manufacturing process

I imagined a sleek looking technological marvel. This is a piece of junk.
— ignorant cycler captain searching for the source of the pulse onboard his own ship
The transmitter is not aestheticly pleasing. It is cobbled together from desperate pieces of different colours.

Significance

Short Spectrum

For close ship-to-ship combat whereby a target's systems will be overwhelmed.   This leads to the stalled engines being damaged and the craft's momentum, prior to the lost propulsion, being all that is left of its movement through space.

Wide Spectrum

For planet-side raids and sieges, the device would disrupt electronic systems vital for defense.   There is no focus or control over what the disruption field would effect. Defenders experience random system glitches and malfunctions.

Nice article - that sounds like a dangerous piece of tech! Really perfect for sabotage. Though 10m is a bit long for putting it in your pocket and casually letting it drop in a corner XD Would it be more something that would be sneaked on during cargo loading at a spaceport ?

Thank you for your comment!   Yes, the Disruptor Transmitter can definitely be a dangerous piece of technology and is more suited for sabotage than any other use. As for its size, you are absolutely right that it would not be something that could be easily concealed.   The original conceit was of a "secret weapon" designed by a genius engineer from whatever parts they could happen to find. It's actually more of a directed energy weapon that requires a lot of power and a large antenna to function properly. As such, it's quite obvious and would be difficult to hide. The ad hoc 10-meter height, in addition to it's 'cobbled together' nature, is to resemble a large ugly hulk that wouldn't be misplaced in a cargo hold.   This is to its benefit as a type of camouflage, such those on the same side may not be able to find it. It would be nearly impossible to sneak it onboard an unfriendly in this form. Thanks for your suggestion!
