The Grand Order of Wizardry and Necromancy

The Order has existed for millennia uncounted. The mages of the order were critical to the development of the Original Empire NAME TBD and acted as consorts & counsel to the aristocracy, in some cases taking over as rulers themselves. The GOWN has, from time immemorial, had its seat of power on an island in the XXXXXXXX Sea.  The entire island is a massive, beautiful, impregnable fortress protected by innumerable layers of magic from any unwelcome visitors.  
  History of the Order   The order identified and trained any who wanted to use magic, helping those that had natural abilities to control or channel their gift, as well as those who sought to learn the arcane arts through study.  Over centuries the small outpost on the island became a larger community, and eventually became as powerful as the rulers who they served. During the War of the Worlds they truly shone, providing massive arcane firepower to aid the @knights and @palidans turn back the hoard of evil spilling from the @underdark. Unfortunately, it was too late for many of the civilizations, and the remnants of the @humans, elves, halflings, dwarves, and others had to rebuild from the ruins of the war.  
Again the Order came to the rescue, taking on a larger role in the world.  Led by TBD, the mages solidified their power and begin to conflict with the aristocracy.  As tensions grow @TBD became obsessed with preventing another war through any means possible.  GOWN began to see magic as the only solution to all problems in society, and as TBD aged, he realized that his ability to maintain power was waning with his mortal shell. Unbeknownst to the others in the @High Council; he began studying methods to prolong his life.  Eventually this led to his becoming a lich.  Once he was discovered, a schism developed not only with the @aristocracy, but within the GOWN.  
  Another war ensued, as the Paladins fought back against the evil of @TBD eventually slaying his mortal form and burying the phylactery deep; in a place unknown to any but those who were present for the final fight. At that moment, as the sun rose in the east, The Order of the Golden Dawn was formed.  Dedicated henceforth to the destruction of magic. 
 As the world descended in to The Dark Ages the people lost faith in magic as word spread of the evil perpetrated by the Lich. Led by Alistair the Bold the The Society of the Golden Dawn began to seek out and make examples of the Magic Users that remained in public view. Buoyed by growing public sentiment against magic throughout the land, with its ranks swelled with volunteers, the Society turned its resources against all arcane magic; seeking out magic use and magic-imbued arms and armor wherever they surfaced. Joined by priests of The One True God; The Society spent centuries ridding the continent of anything arcane. 
  The remaining mages withdrew to their island, taking with them their knowledge, lore, and arcane powers, vowing to keep magic alive in the world. As public sentiment turned against them and the Society hunted down their members, the Order built its own network of spies and informants outside the island, and began to study ways to keep arcane magic use from the prying eyes of the Society Inquisitors . Thus, the antiscrying school of magic was born.  
  Current Day 
  The Order continues its mission from the confines of it's Island Fortress, building a surreptitious network of spies, agents and informants to bring information, magic items and children with magical gifts back to the island.  They continue to train those that come to them, though much of the most powerful magic has fallen by the wayside with so few able to progress to the highest levels of power. The Order continues its work against the Society of the Golden Dawn; and are just starting to understand the ways in which suppression of magic over ten centuries has impacted the land.  Pockets of magic are erupting in various spots throughout the land; necromantic magic causes undead to appear, demiplanes of various form and factor have begun appearing- to what end no-one knows.  Elemental magic has been erupting, orcs and giants and trolls have all been agitating in their respective corners of the world.  Dragons have been spotted flying in desolate locations; though not many believe those that claim to have seen it with their own eyes.  As the High Council has begun getting these reports; their minds turn to the most important magic of all- the seals that protect the world from the Underdark and the Lich's phylactery...
