In Adia, magic is everywhere—it would be most accurate to consider magic an ability as innate as breathing. Adia is a land where even the smallest child can learn simple spells to change the color of a favorite toy or shift a branch that is in their way. Though everyone is capable, many are content with their own innate skill and do not pursue further study of the art. Those driven to push their limitations and discover more about their abilities attend the Mages’ College to research new spells and master those that are known.
So far, little is known about the full extent of the rituals and great feats that can be performed through magic, but the mages of Rumdorfel and the Institute of Magical Conflux have learned a few key things. First and foremost, magic is drawn from the inner strength of the individual. Some races consider this an externalization of one’s force of will or resolve while others see it as a way to measure the strength of connection one has to the Fire Eternal. Whatever the name, this inner strength is broadly referred to as “Spirit.” Second, each individual has a unique color of Spirit that seems to be influenced by all manner of things such as where one was born, the age of an individual, and even where they have recently travelled. Individuals also tend to gravitate toward magic that matches their own. Finally, Spirit can be extracted, bottled, and traded in some circles. This is mostly done through the distilling of certain plants and fruits rich in Spirit and is often used in potions to help reinvigorate those that drink it. Although drinking reasonable amounts of Spirit has no ill effects, overdosing on it can lead to Vampirism and other health concerns.
