Caelsimilian Color Symbolism

Green

In Caelsimilan culture, the color green most strongly represents nature and the natural world, therefore it is heavily associated with growth, health, prosperity, vitality, and vigor.   Of the 6 major gods of the Caelsimilian religion, Sabella is considered to be the creator of plant life and trees in particular, which are abundant in the over-all temperate region of Caelsimil. As a result, Sabella is often depicted with green hair. As a goddess of freedom, redemption, forgiveness, and compassion, the color can also be used as a symbol of liberation, transformation, and and even love.   It is not uncommon to see green decor used in celebrations of pregnancy and birth as a symbol of new life, and green-eyed folks are believed to be healthier and more fertile- making green eyes a common beauty standard in the region. On the old Caelsimilian flag, the color green was used to represent the inner planar system.

White

The color white is somewhat contradictory, as it is understood to have many different meanings throughout greater Caelsimilian culture and its subcultures. White is seen as the color of communication, clarity, connection, and accessability. It is a standard for text on public and business related signage to be outlined in white for visibility (this also associates the color with the idea of travel). It is also known to represent leadership, teamwork, transcendence, and the spiritual journey. On the old Caelsimilian flag, it was used as a point to connect other planes with the material plane.   In a more negative light, it can also represent vulnerability, sickness, and pain. It is associated with death and old age due to the color of bones and the loss of natural pigmentation throughout life. Paradoxically, this results in white sometimes being linked with loneliness, isolation, and frailty. White clothes and flowers are commonly used in mourning.

Orange

An overall positive color in Caelsimil, orange is seen as a symbol of strength. The creator god Altamere is usually depicted donning bronze armor, which was a standard of the Caelsimilian military throughoug the majority of their history. Any military member who is sent into an active combat zone is given an orange shield brooch as a symbol of their strength, bravery, and defense of the nation. Due to its connection to Altamere, it is also seen as a symbol of leadership and often associated with law.   In emotional terms, vibrant orange is linked with passion and intense emotion such as anger and ecstacy, perhaps because of its presence in fire. Duller oranges and browns are associated with feelings of change and inevitability. Caelsimilian culure does not distinguish between orange and brown, and they are regarded as the same color.

Blue

Bibiana is said to have created the oceans, rivers, and all flowing bodies of water, while Sabella is believed to have created calm water, such as lakes and ponds. Especially along the coast or near one of the many large rivers that flow through their nations, Caelsimilans recognize the importance of water and the nourishment it provides. In addition, they recognize that water draws folks together. As such, blue is seen as the color of life and of life force itself, and the color of strengthening bonds, family, and community. It is often used to represent living beings as a whole, particularly anywhere on the material plane.   Blue can often be found in the uniforms of clerics, doctors, and midwives, and is frequently used in signage and symbols that denote guilds. In some areas of Caelsimil, blue is a standard color for wedding attire. Light blue is considered serene and used to depict Heaven, making it common in churches and temples.

Red

In Caelsimil, red is a color of martyrdon, devotion, and sacrifice (including self-sacrifice). As opposed to bright orange, whose passion can often be fickle (much like Altamere himself is depicted in mythos), red is the color of surety and consistency. It is associated with hard work, loyalty, promises, and eternal bonds. In some mystical circles, red is the symbolic color of immortality. Lifelong friendships are commonly referred to as "red friendships" or sometimes "cardinal friendships," in reference to the vibrant, bright red flowers that grow throughout various regions in Caelsimil. At its most intense, red is associated with obsession, stalking, and delusion. In fact, those who suffer from delusions are said to have caught "maroon fever." Lifelong friendships are commonly referred to as "red friendships" and sometimes "cardinal friendships," in reference to the vibrant, red flowers that grow throughout various regions in Caelsimil.

Purple

Purple is regarded as the favored color of the deity Iolond, god of magic, trickery, and secrets. As such, purple is seen as a color of mystery, allure, and deceit. Acting troupes throughout Caelsimil have adopted the color into their own logos and symbols, as Iolond is regarded as a of thespians. Purple stage curtains are considered the standard by the Greater Caelsimilian Guild of the Performing arts, and many magical academies use the color in their own logos and symbology.   Outside of acting, purple is linked to introverts and often associated with thoughtfulness, introspection, relaxation, and reprieve. For some, too much of the color purple induces paranoia and anxiety- a phenomenon entirely unique to native Caelsimilians.   The phrase "lost in the purple sands" refers to someone who suffers from self-deception. Periods of particularly strange or peculiar natural or local phenomena (such as a string of mysterious disappearances or highly unusual and unexplained magical activity) are referred to as "purple nights."
