Betty Brilliance Character in Pathfinder Pirates | World Anvil

Betty Brilliance

Miss Dresmorlin Helviar (a.k.a. Bri, Linn)

Once a starlet that serenaded crowds of wealthy people in the city of Merrine, Betty now spends their nights hosting cabaret shows in Roselake. They're flirtatious towards anyone who so much as breathes around them. That charming nature is played up even more on stage, the show being the perfect excuse to make playful banter with anyone who catches their eye. Off the stage, Betty entertains guests in more intimate ways, provided they show them the respect they deserve.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

They have a slender form that they like to accentuate with corsets, giving their body the appearance of an hourglass shape. They're on the taller side, especially when wearing heels, giving them an intimidating, but alluring silhouette.

Facial Features

Betty has very androgynous facial features, which works to their advantage when they get into costume for the night. It also makes it very easy to disguise themselves with practical means alone, rather than using magic.

Identifying Characteristics

The first thing anyone notices about them is their piercing, ruby gaze that's reminiscent of a hunter stalking its prey. An intricate tattoo of a lace pattern covers their neck, which they never cover up. Their legs are long and shapely.

Apparel & Accessories

When in costume, Betty wears all manner of excessive and extravagant outfits. These outfits can never hide their tattoos or their legs, the latter being their "money maker". They primarily stick to dark colors, like deep plums and black. Jewelry is a must when on stage, as well as a full face of makeup. Off of the stage, Betty dresses in loose fitting clothes, little to no makeup, and their hair is put up in a messy bun.

Personal history

Miss Betty Brilliance was born in a village on Valimar to parents who were terribly unprepared to bring a child into the world. They didn't want another mouth to feed when they were on the run, so their mother tossed them over a bridge and never looked back. A half-elf woman stumbled across Betty after they washed ashore. Tilania was her name and she was running away from an abusive, elven society. She was barred from having children due to her status as a "half-breed", so the arrival of Betty felt like a sign that things were finally turning around.   Tilania adored the child and after a long, hard year on the road, she found a cabin to call home. From then on, Betty had a fairly normal childhood. They knew nothing of their biological parents, so they never thought to question whether Tilania was truly their mother or not. Betty felt a call to theatrics, only encouraged by Tilania's bardic ways. When the pair traveled, they spent a lot of time singing and telling stories to pass the time. After Betty turned fourteen, things took a turn for the worse.   Elven soldiers had caught up with Tilania. She urged Betty to hide in the cellar and told them that once everything was quiet and the sun had set, they were to run and never come back. That would be the last time Betty ever saw her. She hid them just in time as the soldiers attacked the cabin. They took Tilania prisoner and once her screams had faded, Betty made their escape. For the next phase of their life, they lived on the streets of Merrine. They earned food by performing songs for passersby and when the weather turned foul, they'd find a cramped alley to tuck themselves away in.   By adulthood, Betty was noticed for their talents and taken in by the owner of the Ivory Crown Club. It was here that Betty found their home, performing on stage nearly every night to a sea of drunken faces staring back at them. They were the face of the club and a celebrity in the city. They had everything they ever wanted; money, love, and power. All good things come to an end though. Once the owner of the club passed away, they were given the boot. The club was rebranding itself and no longer wanted to be known for drag shows.   With nowhere to go, Betty was back on the streets. Two years later, they met Redhawk while he was in Merrine to collect a debt. He was fascinated by them and upon discovering their talents, he offered them a spot on his stage at the Mystique in Roselake. Betty couldn't refuse such an offer and has been with the Brass Jackals ever since.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

They need to feel desired at all times and will do anything to get attention. While greed is another driving factor behind their motivation, validation is what they seek most. The life of a star gets exhausting, but without all eyes on them, they'd crumble under the weight of their worsening mental health.
