Cliaphora's Promise Myth in Pateni | World Anvil

Cliaphora's Promise

Historical Basis

Cliaphora was a Witch known to live in the Peshti area in the late Age of Witches. However she was also known to be intensely reclusive, and few records exist of her words or actions.   The people of Peshti saw Cliaphora as the protector of the town.

Variations & Mutation

One version of the Promise claims that the Promise was not something magical but rather a marriage between Cliaphora and an unknown man. Although there is no evidence of Cliaphora being romantically involved, there are some who believe that it was likely that she was married. The vast majority of Witch scholars find such claims unreliable.

Cultural Reception

The isolated location of Peshti for most of its history restricted the spread of the story of Cliaphora's Promise, and it is really only after the Peshti Disaster that the story of the Promise began to spread to the wider world. The survivors of the disaster were easily identified by their use of the Promise in iconography, though they remained a significant minority in the Ereshkigali States and soon integrated entirely into Ereshkigali society.   The exact details of the Promise have been lost to history, and not even the surviving residents of Peshti knew the details. This lack of details sparked a great deal of conflict within the academic community. While most scholars agree that Cliaphora had made some sort of deal with the residents of Peshti during her lifetime, there is a small minority that argues that the story of the Promise was created and spread by the prominent families in order to maintain control over the town's politics.
