Nanobots

Nanobots are robots of the order of a manometer (1 billionth of a meter) that have been developed by Pharmabots. These nanobots are injected into the bloodstream and are used to treat different types of diseases (cancer, AIDS, viral diseases, etc.).

History

The Pharmabots group, specialized in medical robotics, has invested more than 5 billion dollars in the fight against cancer based on nanobots capable of destroying cancer cells. The first marketable treatment arrived on the market in 2078, thirty-one years after the beginning of the project Nanite. At the time of its release, the treatment came in the form of an intravenous injection, its effectiveness was ten times greater than all other treatments and the negative effects were almost non-existent. This "miracle" treatment turned cancer into a harmless disease. Since the first treatment in 2078, many other treatments have been developed by Pharmabots. Nanobots are now able to destroy viruses and act as antibodies. More than 52% of the vaccines on the market use nanobots.   For the past decade, Pharmabots has been investing billions in the research of "reconfigurable" nanobots. The goal would be to develop multi-functional robots that could be reconfigured using X-rays. To cure a disease, it would be possible to inject these multi-functional robots and configure (or reconfigure if they are already present) them to treat a specific disease.

Usage Problems

About 1% of the population cannot be treated by nanobots. The body treats nanobots as foreign bodies and tries to destroy them. This results in a rejection of the nanobots and a high fever of the patient for more than a week.   Nanobots used to treat a disease (as opposed to those used in vaccines) are "incompatible". If several nanobots are active in the body then they interfere with each other. The efficiency of the treatment is then divided by 3. The World Health Organization advises to treat only one disease at a time and to delay a second treatment for one month (the life span of the nanobots).

Extra-medical Applications

In 2089, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned about the use of nanobots to increase the physical and mental capacities of humans, the side effects are very serious: partial or total loss of mobility, acceleration of the aging process and death.   In 2092, the United Nations reported a bacteriological attack in a village in New Zealand. The nanobots were delivered by ingestion after the well had been contaminated.   Since 2090, a new drug is present on the street, the Funkite. This drug is composed of nanobots with psychoactive properties. Funkite is famous for its duration, the psychotropic effects can last several weeks depending on the quantity injected. It is present all over the world, but is found in greater abundance in Europe.
