Data Shard

Data shards are small memory cards made of a new generation of semiconductor material that allows to store very large amounts of data extremely quickly. These chips can be read by most electronic devices but also by some smart prosthesis. They can store up to 10 times more data than a conventional memory card of the same size.   The material in which the shards are made is extremely rare, it is an alloy of silicon, galium and dernium (a material not present on earth). The shards are therefore extremely expensive, between 1 000 € and 10 000 € per Terabytes for a shard. Data servers do not use this technology because it is very expensive but also and especially because the number of writes is much lower than for the classic memories.

Emotional and Sensorial Shards

A new type of shards has been specifically designed to store information received through sensory and emotional augmentations. They allow to record emotions and perceptions, then using a similar augmentation, it is possible to feel the emotions stored on the shard. This type of shard has been used by special forces for intensive training in extreme situations. The situations were first recorded during real intervention and then adapted to serve as training for future soldiers.   Digital Creation is currently developing a software to edit and create personalized emotional bursts. They have announced a beta version of the software for 2097.

Counterfeits and Contraband

On the black market, there are much cheaper chips. They can be second hand or counterfeit. In any case, the chip can contain viruses that could cause serious material damage to the reader. If it is an augmentation, it is highly possible that it causes an overload, or even an Interface Membrane Infection.
