Damor's Breath

Symptoms & Signs: The most common symptom is a high fever. This is quite similar to that of a cold, which leads to many victims disregarding the disease as such, until their symptoms worsen. Another common symptom is moisture in the lungs. Though often thought of as secondary compared to the hazard of a fever, drowning is a common result if the victim is not cared for properly. Coughing is a side effect of moisture in the lungs. Fluid is often expelled during these coughs, which is likely to spread the disease further if improperly covered.   Transmission: Though many point to the goddess of the dead, Damor, as the source of this disease, physicians have more recently discovered other potential causes. The most common agreement is that the disease may spread through fluids expelled while coughing. As such, it is essential to cover a victim's mouth when coughing, and avoid contact with any fluid resulting from the expulsion.   Treatment: It is recommended for those afflicted to not lay on their backs, and ensure any coughed up fluid is expelled properly to prevent drowning. Additionally, blankets and other sources of warmth are recommended to treat fever. River mint, if accessible, can be used as an additional treatment for fever. Additionally, some physicians believe thyme may help reduce pain from coughing.   Cultural Influence: The symptoms, warmth and moisture, are similar to the common depiction of the afterlife. As Damor is the goddess who rules the afterlife, the disease is named for her. The disease is said by many to be a blessing—Damor wishing to call someone to the afterlife—though those afflicted and their families rarely find it to be such a gift.
