GovernmentThe Merindian empire has a highly centralized government which is lead by Emperor Wulfrum. Emperor Wulfrum has lead the Merindian empire since it's founding and has ruled it for hundreds of years. The government of Merindia is the most efficient and effective in the world, it's leader, Emperor Wulfrum was already a great leader before the empire was founded, and he is now the greatest ruler ever to live, now with his hundreds of years of experience of governing, which he uses to maintain law and order in the empire. Much of the law of the empire was meticulously designed by Emperor Wulfrum himself, and his laws allow great freedom and equality, although there are still some parts of the empire where crime is a problem, mostly in the outlands and the city of Bael. The laws of Merindia also regulates the power of private corporations heavily and keeps most of the economic things like that up to the government, and they make sure that no corrupt company owners can have too much power. Emperor Wulfrum can sometimes seem like an almost godlike figure to some, with his incredibly long life and an immense amount of control, as well as his legendary Magic powers which he uses to help keep the empire in check, and to defend it in times of war. Emperor Wulfrum can't operate the entire empire alone, however, and he has a council of carefully chosen leaders that help run the empire and can even run the entire government of Wulfrum dies or cannot rule any longer. There is also a strict set of rules set up by Wulfrum to ensure that there is no corruption within the government.
ArchitectureMerindian architecture mostly consists of dark grey coloured metal and wood, their buildings frequently feature metal arches and domes. These buildings are constructed of black or brown metal frames that are held together with large bolts being visible and dark wood, metal or stone between the metal framing. A lot of Merindian houses feature decorations and furniture made out of animal parts, as animals are very important to Merindian culture. These can be things like a bear-fur carpet, a chandelier made of antlers, the jaws of an Atrox mounted above the fireplace, and many more. This can vary greatly depending on which distant corner of the Merindian Empire the house is in, for example, a house on Panagon would likely have a feathery dinosaur skin blanket, or for example, a raptor head mounted on the wall.
ClothingThe Clothing of Merindian citizens can vary, but people generally wear a lot of long coats and jackets that are usually made out of fabric and/or leather and fur. These items are usually different shades of dark brown, grey, and black. Merindian cloths are generally more functional than formal, and their clothes are often built with strong materials and covered in pockets, and Merindian coats and jackets tend to be held together with belts and buckles. The coats and Jackets are usually medium or large in terms of thickness. Animal-based clothes is very popular because of the rich wildlife of Merindia, these items can be things such as tooth/claw necklaces, and fur cloaks and other articles of clothing made of things like bear or mammoth fur. Long hair is very common for both men and women.
ReligionMerindia has it's own native religion, which almost went extinct when the Ancient Merindians were under the rule of the Shorian Empire, but Emperor Wulfrum revived the old religion when he created the Merindian empire in the year 885. The Merindian religion is the oldest religion in the world, tracing all the way back to the The Tunguskan Civilization 12,000 years ago. This religion is the largest religion in the empire and a majority of ethnic Merindians follow it, although in total only around 40% of people in the empire follow it, with the second largest religion being the The Shorian Gods and the rest being the dozens of religions that the natives in the empire's colonies follow.
PopulationThe Merindian Empire has a total population of about 495,000,000 inhabitants. Around 1/3 of this population is made up of ethnic Merindians, but the other 2/3 is made up of outlands natives that have been integrated into the empire.
Merindian Colonization of the OutlandsThe Merindian Empire was the first nation to ever start colonizing the outlands, and so far has the strongest colonial empire ever created. Their many colonies are held together by many supply lines and cruise lines of airships and submarines. These colonies are also prevented from rebelling and gaining independence by keeping a large military presence and being able to deploy the rest of the army quickly to the colony to quell any rebellion that could occur. The Merindian Empire makes it clear that it will not allow it's colonies to gain independence, and that they will remain loyal to the emperor. The outlands has hundreds of millions of native inhabiting it, and the colonies in the outlands are forced to decide how to handle them. Outlands natives are promised full citizenship and rights if they prove they are able to speak shorian( the Merindian Empire's spoken language) and are able to successfully integrate into the empire. Outlands natives are also fully allowed to continue practicing their culture and native religions as long as they don't harm others.
Prehistoric Era (-??? to -2,000)Merindia's history begins in -11,000 when the The Tunguskan Civilization conquered the southern forested regions of Merindia. They ruled this without many problems until -9,000 when the Tunguskan civilization began to collapse. While the southern section of the civilization in Kolokrad had fallen, the northern section held out in the southern forested regions of Merindia for another 1000 years, eventually falling in the year -8,000, but leaving a greater impact on the land than the Tunguskans had anywhere else. After they had fallen however civilization wouldn't return for another 5,700 years.
Ancient Era (-2,000 to 0)The early part of the ancient era saw little change in Merindia, with it being ruled by simple tribes, until around the year -1,500 city-states began to appear on the coast of the western forest. The culture of these city-states borrowed heavily from the culture of the Tunguskan Civilization. These city-states were revolutionary for Merindia, their trading of their new technologies brought bronze working to the rest of Merindia, as well as new armour and weapons, their written language, shipbuilding techniques, and their advanced culture and religion. The religion of these city-states still exists, in the form of the Merindian Religion. These city-states formed alliances, fought wars with each other and founded other city-states. By -1000 the city-states had been founded all throughout the western forest and even the mountains, but they couldn't expand into the steppe because the natives there were far too hostile. The steppe in the north of Merindia was dominated by nomadic tribesmen who were excellent at taming beasts and could harness the power of the giant animals of the steppe to crush their foes. These tribesmen proved to be a great threat to the Merindian city-states, and in- 800 they amassed a huge army and invaded the Merindian city-states, utilizing massive beasts like the Steppe mammoth and the Steppe Rhino, they quickly pushed back Merindian city-state forces, burning and raiding everything in their path. The Merindian city-states banded together to fight against this new threat and by -780 they had pushed the Raiders back north into the steppe. To ensure that the raiders would never threaten them again, they created two great walls to block them out of the western forest. The City-states recovered from their losses and enjoyed a golden age, where their technology, art, philosophy, literature, and trading all prospered. The city-states made some great technological advancements, like the discovery of iron and the longship. The City states sent their trading ships to Cocar, Kolokrad, Meru and even as far south as Far Kolokrad, where they traded with the Hyberian civilization. The complex and epic mythological tales of Merindia were written down and expanded upon. This golden age lasted for hundreds of years until war broke out once again in -400. War broke out this time because King Gjalland decided to conquer all of the southwest Merindian city-states using new and groundbreaking tactics and formations. He succeeded and founded the Volundic empire in -370. The Volundic empire kept expanding, conquering the eastern forest, the steppe, and only being stopped in Agamon by the warrior-states that inhabited the region at the time. The Volundric empire even used their longships to found colonies on the islands north of Merindia and even on the south coast of parts of Cocar. even northeast Kolokrad and southwest Cocar. This empire ruled it's vast territory until around the year 400 when the Shorian Empire came.
The Shorian Era (400 to 880)The Volundic empire was conquered by the Shorian Empire, who's massive technological advantage allowed them to conquer all of Merindia and the entire Volundic empire. Merindia was controlled by the Shorians for 480 years after that. The Merindian religion and culture were not forgotten however, with Shorian historians carefully writing down everything they could about the Merindian culture, although the Merindian religion almost went extinct until the end of the Shorian empire in the year 880.
The Fall of the Shorian EmpireIn the final years of the Shorian Empire it had grown to be absolutely enormous, but it was an ancient and dying empire, it had stretched itself so thin and the world had changed drastically since it first came to power over 800 years ago. This empire was doomed to fall, it could barely hold on to it's vast territory, and even suppressing one large rebellion could cripple the empire. During this time, a plan was hatched by none other than Wulfrum, the man who would come to rule the Merindian Empire which would eclipse even the legendary Shorian Empire in size. This plan was to have several large rebellions take place at once, which would completely shatter the brittle foundation of the Shorian Empire and allow for its many territories to finally gain independence. Various prominent people across the Shorian Empire met up in secret to plan this great uprising, all under the wise leadership of Wulfrum. by around 875 the plans were complete, and the rebellions had began. Merindians, Regians, Rindish people, Drakkans, Strophians, Shenrians, and many, many other peoples rose up and overthrew their Shorian lords. After 5 years of bloody fighting, the Shorian Empire had finally been destroyed, it's last remnant being a relatively tiny kingdom in Borea that managed to hold out against the onslaught of rebels. This great event proved a crucial moment for all of the Midlands. Until then, for 880 years, the Midlands were ruled by the Shorians who would never have allowed any form of independence for its subjects. But now that had changed. The former territories of the Shorian Empire were finally free to rule themselves at last. This event would create the largest power vacuum ever seen, which would result in most the formerly organized rebelling territories devolving into battlefields where different groups with opposing ideologies would battle for control. Fighting consumed most of the midlands, and science and progress would nearly disappear, which is why the following era is commonly known as the Dark Age.
The Dark Age and the Modern Age (880 to 1080)While the Dark Age would be a time of war, darkness, and chaos for most of the Midlands, Merindia actually was able to unite itself under the rule of Emperor Wulfrum, becoming one of the few stable nations on all of the Midlands during this time. The Merindians even were able to significantly progress technology, while most other parts of the Midlands regressed technologically during the chaos of the Dark Age. Emperor Wulfrum had a grand vision for the future of Merindia. He saw it united into one nation, and this nation's combined strength would be used to set up colonies in the Outlands for the first time in all of known history, however, achieving this vision would not be an easy task. Wulfrum had proven himself a genius leader by being the mastermind behind the fall of the Shorian Empire, however, his claims of claiming the Outlands seemed to fantastical for many to believe. Emperor Wulfrum had spend decades researching the world, and had read about the failed expeditions beyond the Southern Continents by the Shorian Empire, and was convinced that he could succeed where they had failed, and claim a new untouched world for his people to rule. However, few other people had nearly the knowledge of the world that Wulfrum had, and at the time most people believed that there was nothing beyond the Southern Continents, and reaching lands beyond them was a mere fantasy. Wulfrum was convinced that the future of his new empire was in the outlands, however many were not, and eventually many began to see him as a madman, unfit to rule their new nation. This culminated in northern steppe and the eastern forest splitting off from the Merindian Empire and attempting to overthrow wulfrum in the year 897. The Southest forest would remain loyal to wulfrum, while the eastern forest and the northern steppe banded together in an attempt to crush the loyalists. The loyalists were outnumbered, but they did not give in. With Wulfrum at the head, he implemented advanced strategies to defeat their new enemies. The rebel Merindians used attrition and non-mobile trench warfare tactics in order to fight the loyalists, attempting to use their superior numbers to slowly grind away at the loyalist forces until they simply surrendered out of exhaustion. The loyalists on the other hand implemented far more active and mobile tactics. They used much more advanced technology, they fielded tanks, planes, hydrogen airships, and soldiers with submachine guns. The loyalists also had repaired their factories far more and were able to mass-produce advanced weaponry at a much faster rate. The loyalists used planes to scout out enemy positions and use ariel photography to make detailed maps of enemy fortifications, and then they would use a combined arms assault of tanks, artillery, planes, and infantry to quickly overwhelm their enemies and capture the position. They would also use airships to scout deep into enemy territory and to perform tactical bombing raids on rebel cities. Even the infantry tactics of the loyalists far outclassed the rebels, they would rush into enemy trenches and use their submachine guns to lay down suppressing fire, allowing for rapid advances into enemy territory. The rebels thought that their superior numbers would win the war, but after 2 years the loyalists had claimed a heroic victory over them, uniting Merindia once again, and finally proving the worth of Emperor Wulfrum to all people of Merindia, and together, they would work to find a way into the Outlands.
The Age of ExplorationWulfrum knew that the passages of water that lead to the outlands were far too savage for any ship to cross, however, he knew that a flying machine could easily fly over the passages to the outlands, circumventing the deadly waters that had prevented travel to the outlands for thousands of years. Using planes was considered, but they lacked the endurance and range to reliably reach the outlands, so Wulfrum knew that airships were his only hope of reaching the outlands. Airships at the time were rather unreliable however, being extremely vulnerable to poor weather conditions, having very low payloads relative to their size, and being suspended in the air by explosive hydrogen gas. Wulfrum had already developed a theory however, he believed that the bizarre stratozoans that floated in the skies of Panthea were held up by something greater than hydrogen or helium. In the year 900 airships were sent high into the sky to capture for stratozoans and to research them. This was a diffucult task, but my 909 their secret had been discovered. It was true that they weren't held aloft by hydrogen or helium, they were held aloft by drakkeon, an incredibly strong lifting gas that could lift dozens of times as much as hydrogen all while being almost as inert as helium. Merindian scientists also discovered how to cheaply mass produce drakkeon too. Wulfrum knew that this was what he needed to master the Outlands, and to even rule the skies across all of Panthea, and his engineers quickly got to work in upgrading their now outdated hydrogen airships. With their now massively increased lift, these airships had their flimsy aluminium structures replaced and fabric skins replaced with thick steel, the cabins were expanded greatly in order to fit more cargo and passengers, the fuel tanks were expanded massively, increasing the range of the airships several times, and even heavier guns were mounted on the ships in order to ward off possible enemy attacks. Once the airships were ready, several expeditions were immediately sent to the outlands, and by the year 910 they had returned. The expeditions brought back invaluable knowledge, they had learned that the outlands did indeed exist, and there were entire continents, oceans, and islands out there, and even entire human civilizations yet uncontacted. They also scouted out locations for Merindian colonies to be established. This had finally proven that Wulfrum was right all along, the outlands was real and it was a place that the Merindians could build a mightly colonial empire. He had the support of all Merindians now, and they immediately headed out to establish a presence in the outlands. By around 912 the first permanent settlement had been established in the outlands, on the rugged Windward Islands at the nearest part of the Outlands. This was the first time in all of history that the outlands was discovered, and while the Midlands was still consumed by warfare and chaos, the Outlands were relatively peaceful, and it had many large areas that completely lacked human settlement that the Merindians could settle for their own. Wulfrum's steadfast belief in the outlands had paid off. His empire was now the most successful in all of the midlands, they were expanding rapidly and were the only ones with access to the vast unexplored new territory that was the Outlands, and to trade with many new uncontacted peoples. This newfound opportunity was fully utilized by the Merindians, and by 950 they had set up permanent cities on several continents in the outlands, and they now had the world's strongest fleet of drakkeon airships at their disposal. The Merindian's secrets wouldn't stay hidden forever however, in 935 the nation of Regius had discovered the secret of drakkeon and the Outlands, and they quickly established colonies in the outlands that would soon come to rival the Merindian colonies in some ways. Regius was one of the few nations aside from the Merindians that was able to become stable and actually make progress during the dark age. They had established industries and a large population, which made them very capable of building an empire to rival the Merindians. The Merindians however, had a large headstart in Outlands exploration and superior leadership, which is why they always were one step ahead of the Regians in terms of Outlands exploration and colonization. By 1002 a great technological achievement was made, Durnium, an amazingly strong, bullet-resistant metal. The discovery of durnium would lead to the founding of the Vanquishers which were created to fully utilize durnium's protective properties. Durnium is what the Shorian kingdom had used to conquer Arctus and they had kept it secret for years, but the method to making it got out and it was able to revolutionize warfare.
The Outlands WarsBecause of the ongoing imperial rivilary in the Outlands, tensions had become very high between the Merindian Empire and Regius. Some of their colonies started to border eachother which increased tentions even further. Things remained relatively peaceful however until 1064 when tension between Merindia and Regius in the outlands became too much, and war broke out. The two countries agreed that they would not invade eachother's homelands and only fight in the outlands. The war went on for 3 years, but the Merindian Empire's ability to rapidly deploy troops and send supplies to the outlands won them the war, and by 1067 they had gained a large amount of new land in the outlands permanently gaining an even larger advantage over Regius in the Outlands. Another massive war waged against the Merindian Empire happened in Panagon that lasted from 1070 to 1074. This war was started by the nation of Harellia, a coalition of powerful Panagon tribes that had created a large industrialized society. They were able to raise a massive and advanced modern army that nearly defeated the Merindian Empire, but they were held off, and slowly pushed back until their final defeat at the battle of Aggurrak in 1074, when the Harellians were finally defeated, although they still claimed millions of Merindian lives in the bloody conflict.
Air ForceThe Merindian Empire has the strongest air force in the world. While the main power of the Merindian Empire comes from airships which are considered naval vessels, the airships they carry and support and still an extremely vital part of the Merindian Empire's domination of Panthea's skies. The airplanes of the Merindian army are quite impressive, with many large bombers being able to travel all the way to the The Outlands and across the The Midlands, these planes can be extremely large and powerful, some even able to take on Airships on their own, the greatest airplane being the Iron bombers. The Merindian empire has the largest amount of air planes in the world, and the largest variety. Many of these planes can be carried by airships too, such as their 48 Allegiant Class Carriers, which can carry 28 airplanes each. In total the Merindian Empire has roughly 13,000 fighter planes, and 10,000 bombers, with their greatest superheavy bomber, the Iron bombers numbering at around 600 planes.
NavyThe Merindian navy is highly advanced an amazingly powerful, their Airships can carry huge loads, able to transport and supply entire armies, and move heavy machinery over land, many of their airships have onboard hangars for airplanes, the airplanes are used for scouting and to defend the airship and attack ground targets that are out of the range of the airship's cannons or bombs. All airships in the Merindian navy can perform multiple types of tasks. The tasks these airships perform are bombing, transport, scouting, and fighting other Airships. There are heavy bomber ships that are also able to fight enemy airships, these airships are equipped with durnium armour across the entire balloon and gondola, as well as powerful cannons. transport ships that can carry armies, armoured vehicles, and supplies and scouting ships, carrying several small planes. All military airships are armoured all across their entire gondola and balloon, and they all are equipped with some sort of defence against enemy airships and airplanes. A large amount of airships are also equipped with hangars for airplanes. The strongest airships in the Merindian navy are the two Thrand class superdreadnoughts, that rule the skies with an iron fist. The airship fleet of the Merindian Empire is their strongest force and by far the strongest airship fleet in the world. They have 52 of their main battleships, the Endurance class dreadnougths, as well as 2 monstrous Thrand class superdreadnought. They also have 48 Allegiant Class Carriers for deploying fighter planes, dozens more cargo ships, as well as many other types, such as their hundreds of smaller anti-infantry airships. These massive ships are able to bombard almost any target from the air, destroy other airships and entire groups of airplanes, serve as superheavy bombers, and can carry airplanes for scouting. Merindian ocean navy is much smaller, but still very deadly, while they lack large carriers and battleships mostly, they have a huge fleet of submarines, which are some of the largest and most advanced submarines in the world, and the Merindian empire even has several underwater military bases in which submarines can dock at, although the locations of these are kept a secret. All large ships and all submarines in the Merindian navy are able to cross through the dangerous straits between the The Southern Continents, that lead to The Outlands. The Merindian oceanic navy has only 4 battleships and 2 carriers, but most importantly and 800 submarines. The submarines of the Merindian vary a lot in size and purpose. They have extremely large and all are able to cross into the outlands, and are able to move very quickly to sink enemy ships and cut oceanic supply lines. These large submarines even have large cannons that can fire underwater, and huge arrays of torpedos. The smaller submarines are produced in mass and are used to terrories enemy ships across the world.
Ground ForcesMerindian ground forces are well trained and heavily armoured with durnium plate, and many advanced and powerful tanks. Merindian infantry gain more armour as they rank up, with privates equipped with a chest plate, helmet, arm plates and leg plates, while the highest ranking members of the army wear expertly crafted and highly advanced suits of expensive hardened Durnium plate. Merindian infantry generally doesn't wear camouflage, their armour and uniforms are all a standard colour, which makes no attempt to blend into the environment. The Merindian empire has currently 8,000,000 soldiers currently serving active duty in the army, although they could grow their army to as large as 40,000,000 in a time of absolute need by drawing huge amounts of manpower from their outlands colonies. The Merindian Empire's army is so large for two reasons. The first reason is the Merindian Empire's strategy of maintaining control over the colonies which is to keep a large loyal army in each colony to crush any uprising and fight off foreign armies that could threaten the colony. The other reason that the army is so large is that the alliance the Merindian Empire is in, the Imperial Coalition has a huge amount of tension with the Free Nations Alliance, and a war between the two huge forces is very likely in the near future and the Merindian Empire keeps a large army to be able to secure victory in the war. In total the Merindian army has 8,000,000 soldiers, 15,000 tanks, 40,000 other armoured fighting vehicles, and tens of thousands of artillery pieces.
