Brine Wolf
Chained to each side of that other cave opening lay a pair of fat wolves with spike-bristle hair growing down their backs. Brine wolves. One of the wolves lifted its head and growled. JuJu growled back. The nisslings stopped their bickering over the knucklebones. They all turned and stared at Fawkes and JuJu. One Nissling stood up, snatched up a spear that, at four feet, was a foot longer than the nissling was tall. It puffed out its chest. With an officious air, it strode over to Fawkes, all the while keeping a wary eye on JuJu, who towered over it. JuJu ignored the nissling and the spear to peer over at the two wolves.Recently, the Hidey-Hidey nissling in The Thrundank have decided to make brine wolves their pets, a decision made after seeing other folks, especially humans, with dogs. Currently, the tribe only has the two, a mated pair, chained to the entrance of the Bossy Boss cave. Kept very well fed and spoiled with attention, the brine wolves seem to be content with their life in Hidey-Hidey Lair. During the attack of The Hand upon the lair, the two brine wolves were released from their chains. Several nisslings swear it was the wolves who turned the tide and brought them victory. Since then, the female brine wolf has birthed a litter of four pups in the Rookery. Here she is raising her pups right along with the female nisslings raising their hatchlings. Who knows what this will mean for the future?
Basic Information
Anatomy
A brine wolf is a four legged creature that is slender, powerfully built and has a large, deep chest. It also has a sloping back and a powerful neck. Its legs are longer than most other wolves, which enables it to move swiftly over the swampland it calls home. Their muzzles are long and blunt, sporting strong jaws well-suited to crushing bone.
The fur of a brine wolf is very dense with the longest hairs growing on the back, front quarters, and neck. Along their spines grow stiff bristly fur that stands up all the time. Their legs and undersides are generally white tinged with a pallid green. The rest of their bodies are covered in a mix of white, brown, gray, and black. All of these colors are tinged with a faint green.

Genetics and Reproduction
Brine wolves mate for life, though if one mate dies, another is sought out. They become mature at two years of age and sexually mature at the age of three. Oestrus, when the female is sexually receptive, and rut, when the male is sexually active, begins in the second half of winter and lasts for two weeks. Gestation lasts between 62 and 75 days with the pups being born in the spring or early summer. Young females give birth to 4 or 5 young while older females have between 6 to 8. Very rarely, exceptionally large litters might reach 14 in number.
A female will nurse her pups for about 6 weeks or so. By then her pups are eating solid food.
Growth Rate & Stages
Newborn brine wolf pups are born blind and deaf while weighing about one pound. They are covered in a short grayish-brown fur tinged with pallid green.
They begin to see and hear between 9 to 12 days old. At around 21 days old their milk teeth grow in. When they are about a month and a half old, they are agile enough to flee from danger. It is around this time that they begin to eat solid food.
At about four months old, they begin to follow their parents hunting. They will stay with their parents in a pack until they reach anywhere from 10 months to 4 years old!
Ecology and Habitats
Brine Wolves prefer swamplands and wetlands.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Brine wolves are clearly carnivores, though they will also eat apples, pears, figs, melons, berries and cherries.
Single wolves or mated pairs typically have a higher sucess rate than a larger pack as they tend to take down smaller prey that is more plentiful. Their prey includes rodents, fish, snakes, and deer. When the pack is large, they will go after bigger prey like water buffalo or swamprus, a freshwater walrus.
