The Messape Larder

A collection of recipes curated by the Mystic Hall of Downkri detailing the proper ingredients, techniques, and consumption techniques of food and drinks used in the Festivals of Caulde.

Purpose

The Island of Managola codified the cuisine of their religion after the defeat of the Mochoi Horde. The burning of the Temple of Caulde had destroyed the parts of their library which were not taken while evacuating to The Bulwark. This included the recipes for all foods and beverages used in religious festivals and ceremonies.

Background

Prior to the Mochi Horde invasion and the evacuation of Managola Island, the food and drink used in religious ceremonies were prepared from recipe housed in temple libraries. Every major settlement on Managola was sacked by Goblins during the invasion and the entire culinary history of the religion was lost in fires and looting because the priests could only save the most holy of texts.   The last of the goblins were driven from Downkri shortly before the fall Festival of The Blow. While creating the traditional mulled wines and fortifying stews served during the festival, arguments erupted between the chefs and cooks for the different towns. These disagreements couldn't be immediately settled because of the destruction of the library in Downkri, and wouldn't be settled for another two years.   The First Council of Managola commissioned a group of culinary experts to collect, discover, recreate, and curate any extant recipes as the beginning of an epic cookbook collection which became known as The Messape Larder. This group, The Messape Hearth, consists of a representative from each temple and continues the original mandate during their annual meeting.

Legacy

The Messape Larder has led to fanatical devotion to culinary tradition among the Managolans. While creativity thrives in the secular sphere, Messape food and drink only changes when old secrets are unearthed.   A small technical change to the process of creating Bloodwine enacted in the first year of the new millennium was the last alteration approved by The Messape Hearth after a six hundred year old scroll was gifted to the temple by a Crawshank merchant.   Most recipes are complete or near-complete; however, there are a number associated with rare festivals and ceremonies considered completely lost:
  • Poliole
  • Rum of Caulde
  • Je
