The Flame of Yaltur

"Never been to Belyos before? Ah, you'll be seeing your first glimpse of it soon. I know it's night time, but what's that got to do with anything. There, you see? That purple light on the horizon? That's the Flame of Yaltur. Been burning since the Empire was founded, two thousand years ago they say. Never gone out, in all that time. They also say it's the tallest building in the world, and I can believe that. Better than any lighthouse, that's for sure."
When Yaltur and the other Inheritor Gods founded The Empire of Belyos  they did so as a reward for their faithful followers, after the cataclysmic events of the Inheritance War. As a sign of his unending commitment to the people, Yaltur set a purple flame atop a great spire, decreeing that he would never abandon his people as long as that fire still burned.   Even during the dark days of the Sakamohr hegemony, the Flame was kept alight and the hope that Yaltur would renew his Empire was retained. Whilst the rest of the city was largely abandoned, the Temple Guard remained and ensured that the Flame remained lit. This faith was rewarded, as the Sakamohr were eventually evicted, and Til-Yaltur's crusade unified the Empire once more. It is said that the flame flared brightly for several days upon his coronation, showing that Yaltur approved of Atun's taking of the throne.   The spire upon which the Flame sits is about 160 meters tall, and is easily the highest point in Belyos and for dozens of kilometres in any direction. It sits on top of the main temple building, which itself sits on the second highest hill in the city. The flame is so bright and distinctive, sailors can use it to navigate to the city from far off, and it is always the first thing people see when approaching the city.   The Flame does not use normal fuels like a regular fire. Instead, Yaltur used his divine power to have the flame fuelled by the devotions of the faithful, with a 'choir' of devotees dedicated to maintaining this worship. During the dark days, when the Sakamohr ruled the city, the Temple Guard themselves took up this duty, and as such, proudly display a stylised flame on their cloaks to signify it was them who ensured that the fire never went out.
