Sakamohr Horse

"They say that nothing good comes from Sakamohr; that the darkest days of the Empire were when those heathen barbarians took over the land. I disagree. Without them, we wouldn't have these beauties. Look at them run. A fine specimen of an animal, and yours to keep, for the right price. My family has been breeding them for over a hundred years. Quality guaranteed."
The lands now claimed by The New Empire of Belyos are relatively low-lying, fertile, and marginal areas excepting, do not suffer from extreme weather, being neither too hot, nor too cold. Since the early days of the Empire, ships have been an important method of transport, and it wasn't long before a well maintained road system was build to supplement this. Whilst the horse had been domesticated a long time ago, within the Empire, breeding had concentrated on animals suited for pulling carts and chariots; breeds had not been developed that were capable of carrying the weight of a rider for any suitable distance. The majority of over-land travel was either by foot, or by ox-drawn cart, with the occasional carriage pulled by Imperial horses. This situation was not the same in the lands of the Sakamohr.   The Sakamohr had no large inner sea with which to have ships for, no unified empire to build and maintain a road network, and had much greater extremes of weather, lending a more nomadic lifestyle to their culture. As a result, breeding by the Sakamohr had led to a number of horse breeds suited for riding long distance, and coping with the cold and heat of the Sakamohr plains. When Pexld the Conqueror invaded Imperial lands, he did so at the head of an army that was almost entirely cavalry, and swept aside the minor, infantry based resistance that faced him.   When the Sakamohr were finally beaten, their horse herds largely remained, although the knowledge of how to breed them was initially limited. Cavalry started to emerge in Imperial armies and by the time of Til-Yaltur Sakamohr horse breeds were considered vital to any effective army.
