Bugbears

Hefty 7-foot tall goblinoids, covered in coarse fur, Bugbears have a reputation as one of Amaranth's most feared shock troops. Away from the front line, Bugbears are also some Amaranth's best military leaders and mentors as well as being upstanding and well-disciplined citizens. Whilst many of them are integrated wholly with Amaranth's society, some prefer to form tight-knit groups of their own kind, pooling their resources and living, fighting and campaigning together.   Several Houses exist purely to facilitate this lifestyle, supporting them when they live within the city; raising children or resting and training. And then benefiting when the whole group re-enlists with the military. (As well as negotiating for groups mustering out of the military.)   Bugbears universally seem to hold some ingrained animosity towards Minotaurs, who they view as clumsy, ritualistic savages who spend too much time worrying about nature. Attempts to break down this animosity have succeeded for a time, but it somehow re-asserts itself after a few years, and working around this incompatibility has become second nature for civic leaders.

Origins

The Bugbears oral traditions say they built large, but collapsible settlements far to the east, and trailed and hunted herds of beasts - collapsing and rebuilding the towns whenever the herds moved on or hunting became scarce. Though naturally quite peaceful, they were preyed upon by other humanoid species and developed a strict military discipline and martial heritage, helping them to defend against these savage encroachers upon their towns. But some five centuries ago, the first Bugbear tribes were driven west by the encroaching Orc Swarm.   Arriving at Amaranth, they were first surprised to see the Red Orcs living peacefully in the city, and, supposedly inspired by their quiet discipline and inner focus, asked to join them. Despite the red herb having no effect on Bugbears, they still enjoy a close relationship with the Red Orcs of Amaranth to this day.
